As parents it is only natural that you would want your child to enjoy as many activities as possible. However, parents who limit certain activities may actually be helping their children cope better with ADHD.
Many parents these days are foregoing prescription medications in favor of a more alternative and natural treatment approach to ADHD.
Most parents who are choosing to go the alternative route use a variety of natural treatments to help their children learn to cope with their symptoms and in order for them to achieve their goals without the negative side effects often associated with prescription medication.
Alternative treatment often includes behavior modification, changes in diet, homeopathic or natural supplements to help reduce symptoms of this condition and activities designed to help children concentrate, burn off excess energy, and give them an opportunity to associate with their peers in a more positive way.
Now more and more parents are learning that actually strictly limiting or eliminating certain activities can also help children with ADHD cope better reducing the number of times that they simply zone out or actually act out. Here is a look at two activities that many parents are now limiting and why.
Watching Television or Videos
While a child with ADHD may think that they want to watch a certain show or video, those with hyperactivity have difficulty sitting through more than a few minutes of television or a movie. They soon become bored and lose interest and then may act out inappropriately simply because they have nothing better to do.
Video Games
Video games should also be eliminated or strictly limited as an activity for ADHD children. Studies have shown that video games can make people feel nervous and jittery and since ADHD often makes them feel this way to begin with your goal should be to lessen these symptoms not increase them.
You can replace these types of activities with model building or an array of art supplies. Children with ADHD for some reason often enjoy doing puzzles and can concentrate on puzzles for long periods of time.
Since models are so much like a puzzle, they offer a child with ADHD the opportunity to quiet down and focus on something they really enjoy.
Art on the other hand offers a child a wide variety of choices from drawing and painting, to working with clay and even origami which allows them to stay happy and change activities when one activity begins to bore them.
By restricting some activities along with a healthy diet, natural and homeopathic supplements, and behavior modification many parents are finding that their children are responding well to alternative ADHD treatment options.
