How to Harvest Aloe Vera Gel From the Plant

How to harvest aloe vera gel from the aloe vera plant is pretty simple. Depending on the size of the leaf, if this is your first time using aloe vera orally your gonna wanna start out in small doses so you know what your body can handle because of its detoxing affects. Just increase your dose little by little. Usually you can get huge leaves from a farmers market. The plants you buy at the store are pretty small. Aloe Vera plants can get pretty big. Make sure its nice and healthy looking.

With your sharp kitchen knife cut one of the outside leaves close to the base. I say the outside leaf because they more mature and are gonna contain the most gel. Cutting the middle will not do the plant any good. New growth starts in the middle of the base. Where you cut the leaf off the plant will begin to seal it up. Have your leaf facing down where it curves downward on the cutting board. This makes it easier to to fillet.

Cut off the portion you need. If you have a big leaf cut it into sections. Slice the edges off where the spikes are to make easier to fillet the skin. Take your sharp kitchen knife and fillet the top o the skin off the gel. Then put your hand on the gel and fillet the skin of the leaf off the bottom. The sticky gooey substance is called Aloe latex which acts as a laxative.

When your obtaining bigger chunks of aloe vera gel just fillet one side and grab a spoon and scrap out the gel and put whatever gel your not using into a glass mason jar. Make sure you put a date on your mason jar because you do not wanna waste perfectly good aloe and the lid needs to be bpa free. If your gonna leave it out sealed in a jar store in a cool place or room temp and keep it out of the sun if your gonna being using it topically. I would recommend the darker colored jars to keep the light out. If you plan on eating it I would put it in the fridge and regular glass jar is fine.

Some people eat the gel part as is, some quick rinse the gel off because the latex, blend it in smoothies, and blend in fresh squeezed juice. Its quite bitter tasting but if you blend it in juice etc you will hardly notice the taste. You can take the leafs and rub what gel is left on your face and arms. Then wash off after twenty minutes. The left over aloe vera you put in a jar will last a week and if you have more than you need for a week I would put left overs in the freezer.

Harvesting aloe is pretty simple just be careful do not cut your self. Fresh aloe is always best compared to store bought products you just never know what is in them or how long its been out or have safe the container is. If you do buy aloe products which ranges from personal lube to beverages. Make sure its certified organic and at thats its mostly aloe because if it has just a trace of aloe your not gonna reap any benefits from it.
