If you are lactose intolerant, you may consider adding lactose free shakes to your diet. These shakes can be homemade, made from a mix or pre-made. Just like a regular shake made with milk and/or ice cream the flavors and consistencies are endless.
The homemade shakes can be others recipes or you can create your own. The shakes made from mixes may or may not taste as good because everyone’s taste buds are different. The pre-made shakes are also an option, just remember to shake well and serve chilled before drinking.
Homemade - I prefer to make homemade lactose free shakes because I have total control over what goes in the shake. I prefer to use almond milk or coconut milk depending on the flavor of shake that I am making. Generally, the shakes are made without much thought in mind of what is going in it because I just have a craving for a shake.
For homemade lactose free shakes, you will start with the milks and ice as your basis. These blended together will give you that consistency that shakes offer. The flavor will come from what you add to this mixture. Shakes can be almost any flavor so you can make a chocolate flavored one to a fruity flavored one. You can sweeten with fruit or even add a little vanilla too. Just to let you know that Blue Diamond offers a chocolate flavored almond milk (sweetened or unsweetened) that makes a great chocolate shake.
Mixes/powders - In regards to the mixes or powders, there are a number of these on the market today. Many of them you can find at your local health food store or nutritional store. They may be nutritional substitutes, assist with weight loss and/or muscle gain. If you are unsure which mix may be the right one for you, talk with your nutritionist or doctor first.
The various mixes you can choose from may be unflavored or be flavored. You can make the shakes according to the directions or add them to other foods and create great tasting shakes. Remember, you are making a shake and it should be thick, tasty and cold.
Pre-mixed - I am sure that you are aware of the company called Nestle. They have a brand called Carnation in which one of the product lines is called Carnation Instant Breakfast. This line offers a lactose free shake (in a can) that is available in vanilla or chocolate. There are actually 3 different versions of which one has 250 calories per serving, one has 375 calories per serving and the third has 560 calories per serving. Let these chill in the fridge or given them a quick freeze in the freeze (don’t forget them) and they are tasty and healthy lactose free shakes for breakfast on the run.
If you are like me, you love shakes. Being lactose intolerant doesn’t mean that you can’t live without a shake you just have to look a little further beyond the shelf of ice cream to products that are still good for you and give your body a hard time. When you have that craving or are in a hurry, lactose free shakes will fill the void and give you the nutrition your body needs along with a ton of flavor.
