Neck Pain Treatments

If you woke up tomorrow and you could not turn your head left or right, or if holding your head up makes you cringe in pain, it may be time to check into some neck pain treatments.

What causes this?

There can be many causes of neck pain from just having sore muscles to chronic arthritis. I went to the Ask site and typed in "What causes neck pain" and came of with quite a bit of information. Some of the causes can be muscles in the neck, muscles in the shoulders, jaw stiffness and shoulder muscles. Other causes can be related to stress and strained muscles. More serious injuries can be due to whiplash, herniated disk, and spinal stenosis.

How to treat neck pain.

For minor neck pain due to stress and straining, I recommend using some of the ani inflammatory balms and creams available on the market. They do work and are helpful in relieving the pain, but remember not to overdo it once the pain lets up, you could do more damage to the effected area. Another thing that helps is massage treatments. I know everyone would love to go get a massage, but there are ways to do this by yourself. Do some reading and experiment a bit and you will find some of these Thecnics work quit well. For arthritis pain I have found something as simple as a warmed up towel wrapped around the neck does wonders for relieving pain. Soak your towel and wring it out and heat it up in the microwave for about 2 minutes. Be careful not to get it too hot! Many times when my hands go numb this is the only way to lower the swelling.

What about more serious injuries?

If pain persists a trip to the doctor will be necessary. I know this is never a good time but it pays to get a professional opinion if you feel it might be a serious injury. There are many nerves that run through your neck and care must be taken not to crate more damage.You may even need some physical therapy.

If would like to remind everyone that anything you can do to combat pain without using over the counter pain medications will benefit you greatly. We tend to take a pill for just about any ailment and this is leading to all kinds of damage to our bodies. The side effects are worse than the symptoms.

Doing some research and trying a few alternative ways for neck pain treatments can make day to day living a whole lot better!

I get neck pains from time to time........like a stiff neck. No fun. All I can do is take some Advil, rub it a bit, and use hot or cold pads.

Taking the Advil is the common response, and if you do it once in a while that is OK, but if you take it every day you are at great risk. Thanks for reading!

Sometimes TMJ can cause neck pain. If you have constant neck pain, and it's really bad, it's not a bad idea to check your jaw alignment with your dentist. I suffered from that for years. You can also get a painful neck or back from sitting in the wrong chair or being too long at the computer (all hunched over). Ergonomic furniture will keep you in alignment. A warm towel over your neck and shoulders is very soothing, plus gentle neck rolls. Thanks for the good advice Shawn.

Great article Shawn, this is something I suffer from and regularly do exercise to combat. Many years ago I had a head on head meeting with another person when diving into a swimming pool. My neck got compression damage or some thing like that the Doctor said, and to combat it I had to strengthen my neck muscles...Well this I have done, but if I have a bad pillow or stressful sleep I will awake with a sore neck that if not corrected quickly, converts into a migraine head ache... Naturally as I have got older I exercise the neck less till a migraine reminds me of the necessity...
