The recent researches of American and German scientists undoubtedly lead to the future principle of treating tinnitus. If chronic sensorineural hearing loss can not be cured, tinnitus can and should be cured by reprogramming the cells in the auditory cortex.
The approaches of American and German scientists are somewhat different. The Germans are on the way of so called Acoustic Neuromodulation. Professor Peter Tast from the Jullich Research Center has invented the method of the so called Coordinated Reset. Its essence is that for every person with tinnitus the special acoustic signals are created. The patient must hear this signals four hours every day for at least six months. These “tailor-made” signals disrupt the pathological synchrony of the hyperactive, synchronous nerve cells in the auditory cortex. As a result, the cells of auditory cortex "unlearn" gradually how to engage in hyperactivity and synchrony.
American neuroscientists at the University of California, Berkeley use for the same purpose the so called notched music therapy. The patients with tinnitus chose any music they like and the experimenters cut from it the frequency range that coincide with the individual tinnitus frequency. After a year of regular listening of this “notched” music the patients said that tinnitus loudness is significantly reduced.
Still, there is such method of psychotherapy as a music therapy, based primarily on the effects of music of Mozart. For a long time regardless of the researches related to the treatment of tinnitus, scholars study the Mozart’s music of as a healing factor for the treatment of various psychosomatic disorders.
Music therapy is commonly used for the normalizing of mental and functional wellness issues. This method is based on the sound theory. According to this theory the music is able to enhance cognitive, affective, behavioral and social performance. Research indicates that music therapy is effective at sinking nervousness and muscle tension, at promoting articulation, leisure, group cohesiveness and interpersonal relations.
There are many theories about the psychosomatic mechanism of the effect of music therapy. However, many researchers agree that the Mozart’s music match for the purpose of such therapy like no other.
The uniqueness of this music is probably due to two factors. First of all Mozart's music is very melodic and easy to perceive. The music of Mozart is comfortable to listen even by whose who is not accustomed to the perception of the classics. Second, in this music the high-frequencies are prevailed. Thus in the Mozart’s music naturally present the same frequency modulation as the German researchers generate by acoustic neuromodulators.
There is some evidences that Mozart's music also helps to reduce tinnitus. However, personal verification of this theory gave opposite results. After listening to the music of Mozart in a few minutes the high-frequency tinnitus increased, moreover, the tinnitus emerged in the second, healthy ear. The experiment was terminated immediately and after five minutes the level of tinnitus returned to its normal level.
Such result can be explained also by the predominance of high frequencies in the music, which, apparently, entered in resonance with the internal sound in ear.
We can come to a conclusion, that to patients with high-frequency tinnitus to listen to the music of Mozart is contra-indicated. Nevertheless, exactly the music of Mozart can be the most suitable music for use as a so called notched music.
We can make the assumption that if you remove from the music of Mozart frequency of a internal sound of patient, it will be much more effective than "any music" as proposed by U.S. researchers at the California Institute of Berkeley, as it contains much more tonal transitions in the range of high frequencies.
