A Look at the Characters That Defined Peanuts

In October 1950, Charles M. Schulz brought out the very first Peanuts comic strip in a local American Sunday newspaper. The strip would run from then until the year 2000, where-after it would continue to run as reruns in newspaper. As well as the strip various films and television shows were also release including, A Boy named Charlie Brown and The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show. This article will look at the characters that became part of the Peanuts series and part of many people's childhood.

Charlie Brown

The most famous and popular character of the series is Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown is basically an anti-hero, a very lovable person but someone fails at everything he tries to do. Charlie Brown has an unlimited amount of enthusiasm, but is forever having bad luck with every thing he does, his can't fly a kite, his baseball team is always losing and he can never kick a football that Lucy van Pelt keeps holding up for him.

Snoopy

Charlie Brown's dog Snoopy on the other hand is the complete opposite of Charlie Brown. Snoopy is not a normal beagle, Snoopy thinks he is a human being and as such does things that human beings would normally do, he can do everything that Charlie Brown can't do as well as more. In the films Snoopy is always having dreams about being a pilot in the second World War, and he is always trying to grab Linus Van Pelt's special blanket.

Linus van Pelt

Linus van Pelt is Charlie Brown's best friend who is in the same class as Charlie Brown's sister Sally. Linus is however a very smart and intelligent boy and is always trying to cheer up his friend Charlie Brown. He is always walking around with his special blanket, he also invented his own mythical being, the Great Pumpkin. According to Linus, the Great Pumpkin is a Santa Claus type character who appears every Halloween to give gifts to the good little children of the world.

Lucy van Pelt

Lucy van Pelt is Linus' older sister, who is always pushing Linus around. Lucy is Charlie Brown's shrink, and is a character that is always belittling Charlie Brown. She is always playing Charlie Brown for a fool by holding a football for him to kick, however she always pulls the football away before he kicks it. She has a crush on the piano player Schroeder and is always hanging around him.

Sally Brown

Sally is Charlie Brown's younger sister who is in the same grade school class as Linus. Sally also has a crush on Linus and often calls him her 'sweet baboe'.

Schroeder

Schroeder is Charlie Brown's second best friend, he is a Beethoven fanatic as shown in the Animated Films and TV Series, he is always with his piano, he also gives advice to Charlie Brown on occasions .

Peppermint Patty

Patty is another bossy girl who likes Charlie Brown. Patty however unlike Lucy is a tomboy who sometimes goes on dates with Snoopy because she thinks that Snoopy is a human being.

Marcie

Marcie is Peppermint Patty's best friend who wears glasses, Marcie is a strange character who is always hanging around Patty and for some reason calls Patty, 'Sir'.

Others

So apart from these main characters, there are other characters like Charlie Brown's love, the little red-haired girl, or Pig-pen, a boy who always has a cloud of dust around him, even Franklin and Frieda or Rerun van Pelt. However these characters do not occur as often in the strip as well as the animations.

Conclusion

To wrap up, these Peanuts characters played an important part in most people's lives in the last 60 or so years and really defined the Peanuts comic strip as well as the animations films and television shows, these recurring characters like Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy and Lucy are the legends of the Peanuts Universe.
