Disaster Preparation Series 02: Automobile

There were no cars when my dad was born. He saw his first one when the family doctor gave him a ride in 1908 or so. He moved to the north east corner of Utah about 1912 and it was a ranching community of horses, not cars. He never owned a car until 1922 or so, still riding horseback. When the Great Depression hit in 1029, he soon could not afford to run his car so the family car was on blocks in the garage until he finally sold it to some neighbor boys for five bucks. Since the car was technically mine, dad gave me a quarter which I think is about a hundred bucks in today’s money. I ran down to the local drug store and blew every penny of it.

We never thought much about the hazards of the automobile until WWII when heavy military traffic killed four of my friends. More cars after the war meant more accidents and more deaths. Now we kill thousands every year. Because of the use of seat belts, deaths have diminished. But here in Idaho with an Interstate speed limit of 75 miles an hour, deaths are common. We also have car/ train accidents because some folks don’t bother to stop, look and listen.

Also, cell phones and texting have added to the deaths across the country. There are too many deaths and injuries. Kids start driving in Idaho when they are fourteen. My grand kids have been in plenty of accidents, mostly when they first start driving. Fortunately they have not been injured. Idaho farm kids are driving at an age under fourteen as they work on the family farm. They are better equipped to drive when they are fourteen because of their driving experience. Idaho kids take driver education and that is helpful.

Many deaths are caused by truckers driving too fast in inclement weather. Many folks do not change their driver habits when the roads are icy and the visibility is zilch. They are asking for it. When a semi jack knifes off the highway, cars too often pile up behind it.

In congested areas where fog is a common nuisance, there are often car pile ups. California is very good at this. Smoke on the highway such as occurred in Florida recently, can cause a long string of cars ending up in a junk pile.

Some people think about automobile safety more than others. They might have a fire extinguisher, flashlights, flares or a good first aid kit. Some have survival gear, perhaps food, blankets and kits. Most don’t.

Drive carefully! As they say, The life you save may be your own.
