Ghettoised Or Merely Modernised?; The Impact Of A Near 6% Rise In Train Journeys

Here in the UK it has been confirmed that train fares are to rise by an average 5.9% in January, more than the rate of inflation. In other words travellers are going to have to pay more to travel whilst in real terms earning less to pay for it.

For those already struggling to pay, this means that their numbers will be cut through the sheer inability to afford travel expenses. This does of course mean some will have to relinquish their jobs to seek ones which are more local; yet which do not exist, which is why they sought employment further away in the first place.

The upshot is that through no fault of their own, many workers will not only be unemployed; they will be unable to obtain local employment, or travel to find commuter-dependent work. They will in effect be contained within a small, geographical location subsisting on whatever is available or affordable.

Now the reduction in income via corporate-price rises, probably means that what is available and affordable is exactly the type of goods sold by corporaton based supermarkets, bakery chains and charity shops of notable corporation style set-up.

Where I live, there are plans for a local church to be knocked down and its land used for the development of a trinity similar to that I just mentioned; it will be in the form of the building of a three in one complex consisting of a well known supermarket outlet; a well known bakery outlet and to top it off; a brand new church outlet.

The cynical, conspiratorialist in me wonders if what we are seeing is the arrival of a consumerist-religious complex similar to the industrial- military complex in which supply and demand manufactured in conjunction with economic engineering , combine to create nations of cellularised communities, bred and fed for dependence upon church and private provision, at a cost and quality not able to be challenged by a cellurised population.

It begins to sound like a Dickensian novel type scenario does it not? One in which the population is effectively ghetto-ised.

Okay, maybe I am paranoid, yet there is still this question to be answered:

If you lived somewhere where unemployment was already high (not because everyone is fat, lazy, alcoholic, and drug addicted; but because they are caught up in this global recession), what would you make of plans to build a lower quality trinity consisting of a supermarket chain, a bakery chain and a church chain; being posited soon before a rise in travelling costs, to a degree which may well result in these three foundations of society being the beginning and end of supply and demand?

Would you A) Think ghettoisation is taking place? B) Progress is taking place? Or C) David needs to get a life?

I am interested, because whilst getting a life is not a new suggestion to me, and neither is progress; ghettoisation is fairly new- and I really would like to think I am being a little over imaginative. However watching the global 1% protestors just now, I wonder.

And I wonder what you wonder? Are we being systematically ghettoised or merely modernised?

I look forward to any comments; either way - D
