The Merriam-Webster dictionary Definition of THE RIGHT OF PRIVACY state:
“The qualified legal right of a person to have reasonable privacy in not having his private affairs, made known or his likeness exhibited to the public having regard to his habits, mode of living, and occupation”.
We can sit and sip tea or any agreeable beverage and chat about the sun, the moon, the stars above and the deep blue sea or anything about you but when it comes to information about me the doors are closed. The inalienable right to human privacy has become a topic of international debate, since the world surveillance revelation of 2013 and our right to privacy is no longer restrained by government and private party. I believe this is wrong and no one should be allowed to venture on our rights.
Who can forget the revelation of NSA contractor Edward Snowden about Government Surveillances during June 2013 include other security breaches. The idea of recording our name, age, address, next of kin and more on any kind of documents that are required by retailers, Insurance Companies, Financial Sectors Human Resource Managements, Social Workers, Medical Doctors, Government Agencies, and the list goes and on. This cloud of personal data insecurity that now looms over our heads is not exactly good.
Announcement of Government spying on the internet, activities of citizens in various countries of the world is making the news from time to time. They have been busy collecting vital information on the activities and telephone communication of citizens for years plus they have been watching citizens like a hawk. Just how much do they see? What do they do with the data collected? Many of us wonder!
There are those who declare that the Government have the right to conduct wide social monitoring in order to provide social benefits in security and safety, therefore, innocent individuals should have nothing to hide. However, the majority of individuals on this planet would prefer to maintain control of their privacy when venturing into public, during social gatherings, home, workplace, online and offline documentation and activities. Some individuals may brand privacy seeking persons as crazy or stupid and maybe they are correct but do they give a care? No! Because they believe it is the rights of people to entertain whatever thought they wish and it is respected.
With the massive surveillance machine in the possession Governments the basic liberties of citizens global wide is under threat include our internet freedom.
Steps that we can undertake to strength our privacy protection:
(a) Conduct all purchases in cash and discontinue or reduce the use of other methods of payments such as Credit Cards, MasterCard’s etc., Credit Card companies have been known to sell your data to retailers.
(b) Manufacture a password answer for related question for the questions such as “What is your mother’s maiden name or what city were you born? These questions are supposed to protect your account, however it could work to your disadvantage so beware.
(c) Do not expose yourself too much on Social Networks and it is best to keep certain information private for your peace of mind. Check your setting and ensure only your personal friends and close family members can see your information. Decide who should see your personal stuff.
(d) Be careful with the password you use when accessing certain account on the net and if you respect your privacy, you should turn on private browsing which is connected to the major browsers also consider including using the service of a Virtual Private Network or download the browser Tor and you will be able to surf in total privacy.
(e) Use a passcode to access your phone or tablets every time you use them so that if they are stolen your data cannot be accessed.
(f) Also consider investing in a monitored alarm system for your privacy protection at home. The Video Surveillance will keep you alert. Your eyes will be on everything include the housekeeper, who attend to your kids while you are away at work. You will be able to see all that is going on at home
These instructions don’t guarantee to make our privacy iron clad but they will help us to reduce the exposure. However, we cannot rely on the Governments to protect our privacy, therefore we need to do so ourselves. Our private life is nobody's business, nor should it be an open book to anyone and to depend on others is like encouraging peeping toms to venture in our lives.
