On April 19th 2012 , the Government of the Bahamas signed a $1.1 million contract with Coastline construction, for Pompey Museum restoration , destroyed by fire last year.
Creation of a new Pompey Square, will have a water fountain in the center, adorned with chairs and tables, landscaped with Bahamian tropical trees, to offer a resting place for Bahamian and tourist, wanting to enjoy the many scenic views of Bay street and Nassau Harbour..
The idea of the square was to create a green space, certain aspects of the plan included, kiosks and spaces to hold concerts. The surrounding building owners, will sell coffee and sandwich. so that people will enjoy their time in the square.
The revitalising of Bay street, and the City Nassau, was the main reason for the square. This project expected to cost $2.5m, completed and functional sometime between October and early November 2012.
The new building will have the following amenities.
Restore the two - floors 3,600 square feet structure.
Reception area, and Gift shop ground floor.
Kitchenette, Storage room, Staff restroom, Expanded exhibition hall and Curators office on upper floor.
Fire Prevention system.
The fire of December 2011 at Pompey Museum, was a disaster to Bahamian culture and anthropology. This was the second fire in this building, but this was the first time that the hidden secrets of this building revealed.
In the wake of the fire, as construction crew tore down the burnt structure, and cleared away the old floors to place a new foundation, unearthed new artifacts were found.
The fire was a terrible event at the time, but the discovery revealed artifacts that lay hidden for many years. The detection by some, was a blessing, although we did lose some items in the fire. The artifacts were found by workers, digging deep underground.
Historic treasures dating back before 1769, were found at the site. The haul includes glass bottles, shells, ceramics, pipes, animal bones and metal unlike anything today.
These items provides an insight, into the lifestyles of people who lived during that period. Not much information exists before about Nassau, during the 1700 and 1800 period, so this find was greatly appreciated. Archaeologist Michael Pate-man will continued his investigation until satisfied, all possible artifacts recovered, and only then will the construction begin.
Local businessmen have so far contributed more than $150,000 for Pompey Square construction, They also want to enhance the scenic view of Woods Rodgers walk, the gateway to where the cruise ship docks.
It is a place of fascination that I would love to visit one day...
