You have probably heard the term alpha hydroxy for years. Do you really know what alpha hydroxy is and what it can do for your skin? After reading this information, you will discover why alpha hydroxy products will soon become your new best friends.

Alpha hydroxy is a term coined to describe a variety of fruit acids used for the treatment of skin. Also known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), there are different types available depending on what it is you are trying to do to your skin. Whether it be for cleansing, rejuvenating, moisturizing, more intensive efforts for anti-aging or other skin issues, find out which is the best choice of alpha hydroxy products for you and your skin.

There are many uses for AHAs. They can be used to treat some of the following skin conditions:

  • Dimish fine lines and wrinkles
  • Repair from sun damage
  • Renewal and rejuvenation
  • Acceleration of cell renewal/turnover
  • Treatment of acne and rosacea
  • Soften, smooth skin
  • Exfoliation
  • Even out skin tone/diminish discoloration
  • Enhance effects of other skincare treatments

Glycolic Acid

The source of this AHA, probably the most popular on the market right now, is from sugar cane. It is used primarily to rejuvenate the skin. It is an excellent exfoliant and increases the rate at which new cells rise to the surface level of the skin. It is good at reducing fine lines and increases moisture and smoothness to the skin. It may also stimulate the production of collagen, which decreases as you age.

Citric Acid

Derived from citrus fruits, this AHA is a source of another great vitamin for your skin, vitamin C. It is loaded with antioxidants to reduce free radical damage, which in turn help to accelerate the production of collagen. This is an excellent choice for all-around rejuvenation of your skin.

Lactic Acid

It may sound strange, but this AHA is derived from sour milk! Just as buttermilk tenderizes tough cuts of meat, this acts in much the same way with your skin.

It is an excellent skin softener, capable of breaking through hard, tough skin, which may be the result of a skin affliction such as rosacea. This type of AHA is mainly used as an exfoliant, and works well to increase the effectiveness of other skincare products to enhance the effects. It also helps to hold moisture in the skin.

Malic Acid

This AHA is made from unripened apples and green grapes. It is used to increase the oxygen supply to muscles to help certain conditions such as fibromyalgia more than for anti-aging efforts.

Tartaric Acid

The final AHA comes from an unusual source. It comes from the by-products left behind during the fermentation process used to make wine. Who knew? This AHA is used to control blemishes, reduce oiliness and diminish fine lines. It helps to even out your complexion.

There are the types of AHAs and how you can use them for beautiful skin. If you think about what it is you are trying to accomplish in your skincare goals, it will be easier to choose the right AHA. For example, are you looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, or is getting a more even complexion your goal?

Find out how the right alpha hydroxy products can give you healthy, rejuvenated skin and a fresh new look.
