Wrinkles development is accelerated by many factors such as stress, insufficient sleep, smoking and poor eating habit. But what caught many by surprise is that alcohol consumption also plays a part in accelerating wrinkles formation and drying up the skin. So does alcohol cause wrinkles? Definitely it does especially wrinkles under eyes, and it is not a speculation by the anti-alcohol group. Instead this finding is pretty much supported by scientific studies.
But how does alcohol causes wrinkles and health issues? What is the link?
Capillary Leakage – The first negative effect of alcohol is that it weakens the capillaries. This causes water to accumulate in some part of the body. For instance, it is common to see drinkers with eye bags and darken area under the eyes.
Hormones Imbalance – Alcohol is a toxin to the liver. Excessive alcohol affects the performance of the liver and in serious cases, damages it. This important organ plays more role than what most of us can imagine. But what is important for us to realize is that it gets rid of excess hormones in the body. When the liver fails to regulate the hormones level, it leads to many health problems including dry skin.
Dehydration – This is the most apparent way how alcohol causes wrinkles. Alcohol leads to frequent urination. Often, the lost fluid is not replaced with water leading to dryness of skin.
At this point you may have realize that hormones imbalance and dehydration cause dry skin, and we want to avoid it as much as possible. This is because dry skin leads to lose of skin elasticity and development of wrinkles.
Eating Habits – Most regular and heavy drinkers have bad eating habit as well. Even though they are aware that excessive alcohol is bad for their health, they cannot care enough to do something about it.
They do not make conscious healthy food choice. Foods high in nutrition and rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals are not on their preferred list. Instead, oily, greasy, salty and high cholesterol foods are usually their top choices. Poor food choices weaken their immunity system and lead to poor and unhealthy skin due to poor blood circulation.
Since alcohol causes wrinkles, does this means that we should abstain from drinking totally? The truth is that drinking is not totally bad. As most of us are aware, red wine has its anti aging and health merits if consumed in moderation. So how to enjoy a glass of alcohol without facilitating wrinkles formation particularly under eye wrinkles?
