How is Alzheimer’s Preventable? 3 Answers to Do Today And 20 Million Economic Reasons for Donating To Research Efforts

Secrets to, “How is Alzheimer’s preventable?” are unraveling in research that reveals what they call risk factors. I’ll share a few of these secrets -- I say unraveling because I'm applying all that research stuff to my own story, without using fancy words.

In fact, I’ll give you 3 answers to do today yourself to put the possibility of preventing Alzheimer’s in your day today. I’m starting by sharing a story, though.

Numbers tell a story of suffering:

1. 15 million unpaid family caretakers of Alzheimer’s patients exist in the US alone.

2. 5.4 million people are living in the pain and fear that is part their Alzheimer’s disease.

3. 5.4 million people with Alzheimer’s disease: all facing certain death as they slowly lose behaviors you may take for granted, such as thinking, walking, talking and eating.

4. 6th leading cause of death in the US. Only heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents kill more Americans.

5. Numbers continue in other countries

Alzheimer’s disease is an epidemic!

Most of the 5.4 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease live at home with family members.

That’s what leads to 15 million family members working unpaid as caregivers. 20 million lives disrupted in the US today. An epidemic that’s become the 6th leading cause of death in the US.

We care about all these people.

But we also miss them in our economy, don’t we? Imagine if there were better answers to, “How is Alzheimer’s disease preventable?”

I mean, what would happen if 20 million more people worked and paid taxes today? What would happen if 20 million more people were buying furniture, buying the new “green” automobiles, putting in solar panels, consulting architects to remodel their homes to have a smaller energy footprint, or even out looking to buy a new home today?

Finding out more clearly how Alzheimer’s disease is preventable, the US would have a sizeable return on investment simply from tax receipts. 20 million people contributing time, talent and treasure to the communities across our nation.

It’s unclear what causes Alzheimer’s disease or how to prevent it. However, there have been studies that suggest risk factors. That kind of answers, "is Alzheimer's preventable" with some specific ways.

Here’s your 3 answers to do today, as promised:

1. Get up – and protect your head all day!

Brain injury seems to be a risk factor, and avoiding injuring your brain may be the ounce of prevention you need. One way to avoid brain injury is to be careful of your head as you get up to go about your day.

I’ve had a number of severe concussions, so I can assure you that brain injury’s rough and has long-term impact. Follow safety stuff, from seat belts to helmets to having proper supervision for sports activities.

For example, wear your helmet every time you move your bicycle. For example, my uncle went to get a newspaper without wearing his bicycle helmet. Hit by a car at low speed, he soon died at the hospital from brain injury.

Get up and take care of your head all day!

2. Get a healthy breakfast inside you – and eat other healthy food today

A number of studies suggest food as a factor in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s unclear whether eating healthy foods makes a big difference. Studies don’t say so conclusively!

But a lot of them certainly do seem to suggest that eating healthy food makes a difference. Alzheimer’s preventable food lists seem to be fiber stuff like vegetables and fruits.

Fish is another that seems to show up most often as useful. By the way, this can help you lower your cholesterol, too.

There are studies which suggest dietary changes may be helpful. They say it's because high cholesterol, too, seems to be related to Alzheimer’s.

Get a healthy breakfast inside you and repeat the eating healthy food thing all day!

3. Get a hug and go for a walk – and look for more hugs today

Studies suggest an active social life helps prevent Alzheimer's disease. Stress management, too. People who are active socially do end up with a stronger circle of support, don’t they?

They probably share helpful family stories of Alzheimer's impact. All of that tends to reduce stress as well.

In fact, many diseases are, as the medical doctors put it, “exacerbated by stress.” Basically, that means stress makes symptoms that are happening, or that tend to happen, worse. I’ve had that happen with intestinal stuff – so I can speak personally on that.

Studies point to high blood pressure, too. But don’t panic if your blood pressure goes up.

Definitely don’t ever let it slide by, either. When blood pressure rises, it can be temporary.

I’ve typically had low blood pressure, so it was a concern when mine spiked up dramatically. But one of my doctors thought it was a side effect of a necessary medication.

Waiting turned out to be the right action. My blood pressure did go down. So don’t panic if your blood pressure jumps, it may be a temporary blip. But it’s a risk factor for a lot of other things so get a medical professional involved.

2. Eat healthy!

3. Get a hug and go for a walk!
