Keeping Fit In Later Years

Seniors should not be sedentary. Keeping fit in your senior years is a must for enjoying the life you have been granted. I exercise five or six times per week and have gotten to the point if I do not exercise, I feel I am cheating my body.

The first rule of exercise at any age is to check with your health care professional. Tell them what you plan to do and ask for suggestions and any limitations they would place on your activity due to your general health.

Whether or not to join a gym is one of the first questions you will have. Myself, I need to leave my home and avoid all distractions that can arise there. Plus, I associate with like minded people which whether they know it or not, they are encouraging me. I know other people who workout fine at home, so it is a personal preference.

Through my Medicare Copay, I belong to Silver Sneakers which is free. Through Silver Sneakers I have access to thousands of exercise facilities in the US. For instance, most YMCAs accept Silver Sneakers.

There are four exercise areas that seniors should concentrate on:

CONTINUOUS ACTIVITY

This is also known as endurance. It includes walking, running, swimming, bike riding, any activity that keeps your heart rate up for an extended period of time. Thirty minutes per session is good, but this can be broken down into ten minute segments. I try to do this type of exercise at least five days a week.

STRENGTHENING

You can use weights, resistance bands, or common object that you find around the home such as books, etc. Health clubs have strength training equipment. Start out with light weights and work your way up. Do eight or ten repetitions and then rest and repeat. Remember, don not overdo this.

Most studies have shown that weight training will help increase bone density and decrease the risk of osteoporosis.

STRETCHING

Stretching is a great way to offset the effects of aging on our joints and muscles. It is so important to keep our flexibility as we grow older. This is an area I want to focus on more. Although I can bend over and touch my toes without bending my knees, I find it hard to put on my socks.

Stretching can be static or dynamic. Static stretching is recommended for older adults. This is where you stretch and hold a position for 20 to 30 seconds. Try to do your stretching at a minimum of two or three times per week. More often is even better and will give you more flexibility.

BALANCE

This is another area where I am lacking, and it doesn't take up a lot of time. Simply standing on one leg for 30 seconds is a great exercise. Remember to always have object nearby to grab onto if you feel you are losing your balance

The hard parts of any regimen are finding time and getting started. Make up your mind you are going to do this. Make a resolution to get started and stick to it. I know you think you are too busy, but you are kidding yourself. As Nike says "Just Do It".

Great advice and I couldn't agree more. I exercise every day in some manner and I always feel good after. I fact, it's when I don't exercise that I feel sluggish. Keep the body fit and the mind active. Gotta try the hot yoga, i really like saunas, so stretching in a hot room is some thing I would really like to try.

Great article....I am writing about how to get in shape before getting to this age....I think everybody should be more in shape....It is a shame there are so few people everywhere who are in good shape and can still tie their shoes and put on their socks without moaning around their big bellies...right? I was there once when I quit smoking...hard to get out of that shape but worth it...thanks

Some great points here. I am a bit of a yoga fanatic as it combines balance, strength and stretching and it lifts your heart beat. Loved your article. Gayle
