Meditation for Seniors

One of the healthy lifestyle tips for seniors is meditation. A recent study has shown that older people who meditate for an eight week period can reduce loneliness and stress and boost the immune system. Other studies have shown a reduction in health costs.

Meditation is a process of getting in touch with your inner self. Prayer can be a part of meditation, but there is more to it than that. Some people think that meditation is a religious practice. It would better be described as a practice used in certain religions. Meditation has no religious affiliation. I remember reading a letter to the editor of a Catholic magazine objecting to an article written by a priest on the virtues of meditation. This woman associated meditation with Eastern religions and felt it had no part in Christian life.

One of the simplest forms of meditation is breathing meditation. To start, find a quiet place and a comfortable position. The cross-legged position may be fine for younger people, but it may be difficult for seniors. Sit upright in a chair. With eyes partially closed, concentrate on breathing - just naturally, preferably through the nose. Become aware of your breath entering and leaving your nostrils. After a while you will feel a sensation which is the object of meditation, concentrate on it.

At first, if you are like I am, this will be hard to do. There will be too much activity going on in the brain. Thoughts will be rushing in and out of your head like crazy. This is normal. It is important to return to thoughts of breathing each time the mind wanders.

Gradually, if we stay with it, the distractions will go away and it will be easier to concentrate on breathing.

Don't get discouraged. The more you try meditation, the better you will get at it. You will experience inner peace and relaxation.

Breathing meditation is only scratching the surface. It can be the first step in learning meditation.

When we start meditating, we may become discouraged because we do not feel a sense of accomplishment. This can lead to feeling stressful which is just the opposite of what we are trying to do. It is important to stay relaxed, in time it will work

Once you have mastered breathing meditation, you may want to advance into other forms of meditation. You may even want to join groups to learn more and develop more in-depth forms of mediation. Whatever path you take, give meditation a try and good luck.

Loved this one too, I have been meditating for about 12 years now and it is such a wonderful thing to support a healthy body and mind. It is also quite easy when you practice. Gayle
