My Take On Coffee

Coffee, Friend or Foe? If you are having a hard time deciding if there really are any benefits of coffee, this information may help you decide for yourself. I have also included my free "coffee regimen" for my fellow coffee drinking mates.

This week I have taken on two controversial health topics. Yesterday it was chocolate, today, coffee. Hopefully my previous article, “Willy Wonka’s Secret” shed some light on the health benefits of chocolate, just as I hope to reveal some of the benefits of coffee in this article.

When it comes to dietary decisions, my take on it is that you have to consider two key things; does the item you are evaluating contain more positive properties than bad and; how does it make you feel when you eat or drink it? This is not to say that one should spend their time trying to decide whether or not to include something like MSG in there daily diet, just because it has what has been ‘promoted’ as having the ‘positive property’ of enhancing flavor.

All I wish to point out is that there does seem to be pluses and minuses on pretty much EVERYTHING on this planet. You know what I mean? It’s just that every time I turn around, no sooner does someone say drink ‘alkaline water’ if you want to live forever! When the next thing I hear is someone else claiming NOT to drink ‘alkaline water’ because it will make you sick!

You get my drift… So this is how I came to the conclusion that when it comes to diet and health one should first get educated, next try what sounds right to them, and then keep doing what makes you feel good and throw out the rest.

Now back to the benefits of coffee. Coffee seems to be one of those controversial health topics. Personally I LOVE coffee, so I took it upon myself to really research it out as best I could. Also, I’ve been experimenting with different coffees for years now to see just what type of effect it has on me, and I now have a finely tuned “coffee regimen”.

If you think about it coffee has been around forever. Supposedly dating back well before 1000 AD when the berries were picked off of a bush and chewed for a boost of energy. Animals were eating them too (they must of secretly known the benefits of coffee ha, ha). At some point man started roasting and drinking it, using it for medicinal purposes, trading it, selling it etc…So based on it’s history alone it obviously has been considered to be one of those things that has more pluses than minuses, cuz it sure has stuck around.

The main ‘positive' I found in my coffee research, is that it contains a very high level of antioxidants. In fact it has been written that coffee may be the highest source of antioxidants. If you happen to have read my recent chocolate article you now know what antioxidants are, what they do and why they are so important.

Coffee is also good for boosting energy, increasing ones metabolism (which helps to burn fat), and since it acts as a diuretic it may help reduce the possibility of kidney stones. Some studies have shown it to be effective against colon cancer. Others say that the high level of antioxidants help to lower the possibility of Parkinson’s disease. It is also a great source of fiber.

On the minus side of coffee, one of the biggest cons I could find are caffeine related issues. There are people out there that just shouldn’t drink coffee due to health issues or allergies. Some people either have sensitivity to caffeine where by any amount just makes them too jittery or they have high blood pressure and have been advised by their doctor to avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks. So, I would say if you know it doesn’t make you feel good to drink it, don’t! Or if you know you have some health issue and you’ve been advised not to drink it, well again, don’t drink it.

For those of you who like to drink coffee and do not seem to have a problem with it, here are my suggested guide lines or my "coffee regimen" if you will:

  1. Only buy 100% organic beans. The reason you want organic beans is so that they have not been treated with any pesticides or sprays.
  2. Use a blend and find one that isn’t too acidic or strong, as the more acidic dark beans it contains, the more potential for stomach upset.
  3. Invest in a coffee grinder and a coffee press. Both are inexpensive and easy to use. Grinding the beans each day as you use them, rather than buying already ground coffee, helps maintain the good properties such as antioxidants. Using a coffee press makes a less acidic cup of coffee.
  4. Try not to drink more than 1 to 2 cups a day.
  5. If you sweeten your coffee try to use raw honey.
  6. If you use half & half, use organic.
  7. Drink water before, and in between, as coffee can be dehydrating.
  8. Coffee can unbalance one’s mineral level, so it is a good idea to take minerals if you drink coffee.
  9. ENJOY!!!!!

Hopefully I have done a good job on revealing some of the benefits of coffee. If you would like to read more of my health articles, please visit me at, BonNaturel
