I think most people have some common sense about diet. Now I’m not saying all the information out there is accurate, because it isn’t, but I do tend to agree with eating fruits. “Ok, ok, and vegetables too”.
Now I may catch a little flack for this, but I thought it was hilarious. I saw a t-shirt once that said “Vegetarian – Old Indian word for ‘Bad Hunter’” As funny as it is though, a diet rich in fruits and vegetable is essential for healthy living.
One fruit I would like to bring out on the stage today is (drum roll please) the Pineapple! Despite the fact that it is a complete nuisance to cut the peel off of those things, the health benefits of pineapple are well worth the work. And besides, if I pretend enough of a struggle, I can usually get my husband to step in and take over so…
Our little friend, the pineapple, is really quite amazing and has a lot to offer. For instance, did you know that pineapple is a great mood lifter? When is the last time you saw a sad Hawaiian? Pineapples are also used for weight loss by satisfying that sweet tooth, and it’s a way to get a good dose of vitamin c as well, not to mention a great way to handle a whole line of digestive issues such as acid reflux. Heck I saw someone claiming it can even cure a hangover. You have to admit you probably never thought you’d read that as one of the health benefits of pineapple! I’ve never tried that particular cure myself, so I couldn’t say.
One of the key properties, and health benefits of pineapple, is ‘bromelain’. Bromelain is an enzyme. Simply put, an enzyme is a protein stemming from a living cell, which can produce changes in organic substances; like during digestion. That’s right, bromelain is a digestive enzyme. Now possibly even more important, bromelain is also an anti-inflammatory, which is why it is often prescribed to arthritis patients. That’s right; it is excellent for fighting arthritis!
Before you run out and start buying up all the plastic containers of peeled and cored pineapple, hold on, there’s a catch. Unfortunately most of the bromelain and goodness is in the core. That’s right folks, the part you usually throw away turns out to be the best part of all. So, ya… many of the health benefits of pineapple are found in the core.
There are really only two solutions to this pesky problem while keeping the live enzymes intact because, if you cook it, you kill it. First you can chew the core like bubble gum if you want too. I know people who do. It takes a while though, like 4 hours, and frankly I don’t have that kind of time.
The second option is to blend it. Obviously a normal run of the mill blender will take forever to chew up a pineapple core, if at all. So, your best option is to use a commercial blender for your home. Putting your pineapple cores in this thing is like having Paul Bunyan trim your hedges.
So, now when you are making those great fruit smoothies, simply throw in your pineapple chunks, along with the core! You won’t notice a difference in flavor, yet you won’t be missing out on any of the health benefits of pineapple. Incidentally, smoothies are a great way to start introducing more raw food into your diet. Some people simply don’t like eating fruits/vegetables or they don’t have the time. And some people have to eat a liquid diet due to health issues.
