Water, Water, Water! To Stay Young, Energetic And Healthy Drink More Water!

We all need to drink in order to survive but as much as we care about what we eat for good health, we should be more concerned about what liquid we pour into our bodies. We should be more concerned about the nutritional value of our liquid intake and its effect on our diet and general well-being.

The human body is around 90% water at birth. This amount reduces to 70% for the time we reach adult age. The water content of our body further drops to around 50% for the time we get old.

Humans depend on the quality of water to maintain physical and psychological functioning. Because of the importance water plays in our in our survival the quantity and quality of water we consume can have a beneficial or detrimental effect on our body.

Water plays vital roles in the operation of our organs. Water regulates our body temperature. It makes the air that we breathe in more humid. It moistens tissues such as those in the mouth, eyes and nose. Without water our body would not be able to assimilate nutrients and remove toxins and unnecessary salt. Lessens the burden on organs like our kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products. Helps prevent constipation. Helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients to make them more accessible to the body. Our blood pressure is stabilized by water. It lubricates joints. Protects body organs and tissues. Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells. Our body functions such as digestion and blood formation are disrupted when we don't drink enough water.

I think this should be enough to convince anybody to drink plenty of water!

What is more, water can help us to remove negative energies that accumulate in our system during the day. There is a reason why in ancient cultures bathing is such a ritual and done frequently. Regular swimming, spa, sauna and steam assist our body to remove negative energies and toxins from our body. Taking a hot bath or a shower after work or a stressful day washes away all those energies that effect us during the day. Drinking plenty of water also contributes to cleansing these energies.

Our brain can't store water. Therefore to stay in a focused and active mental state we need to drink plenty of water for our brain to function well.

Most kids are constantly dehydrated in school that's why they can't maintain focus during classes. For the time they start their afternoon sport or music activities they are in a dangerously stressed state considering their hydration levels. They need constant reminder about drinking water!

People who take medication, undergo treatment, engage in sports, take supplements and vitamins should drink even more water than the recommended 8 glasses a day. In hot weather, in air-conditioned or heated places water intake needs to be increased significantly.

There is quite an argument amongst the medical profession and scientists how much water is the recommended daily intake. You will find anything from 1.5 to 4 liters a day. However, using a body scan that gives you some ideas about your body's water content will give you some feedback. If the number is lower than 70% and closer to 50% you need to increase the number of glasses of water you drink.

There is a quick test that you can use regularly. The more you do it, the more you will get to know your own skin elasticity to observe changes. The turgor is the skin's ability to resist change and return to shape. Pinching the fine skin on top of your hand shows your hydration level. If the skin goes back to its normal shape quickly, your hydration level is fine. However, if your skin takes long to get back to its normal shape, increase your hydration level. This pinch test tells a lot about the condition of your skin in general. How easy it is to pinch the fine skin on top of your hand gives a pretty good feedback about your aging process.

A lot of people mix up signals of thirst with hunger. They eat when they should be drinking water. For the time they realize that they are thirsty, their body is already in stress mode and dehydrated. They feel tired, lethargic, can't concentrate, yawning and some people even get headaches. Serious dehydration cause headaches, migraines, constipation, hypertension and they are more exposed to infections just to mention a few things.

Introducing soups to your diet, juicing high water content fruits and vegetables like watermelon and cucumber also helps to restore the hydration level of your body. However, pure, good quality fresh spring or alkaline water is best.

Here is a tip on how to drink water. A lot of people drink water in big quantity just gulping it down. Drink it slowly and keep water in your mouth before swallowing. Lubricate your mouth by keeping the water in it for a few seconds. Sip water frequently repeating this action.

There are some radical views in the medical profession that most diseases could be prevented and even eliminated just by consuming 3-4 liter fresh, good quality water to flush out toxins.

The best is to listen to your body and gradually increase your water intake and watch your body's reaction. Just a word of warning. This transition is not easy because there is a transitional period of time when you will need to go to the toilet every few minutes and it will drive you mad and you will think something is wrong with your body! However, once your body regains its water balance (this can take any length of period of time), your toilet habits will settle back to a new level 'normal' again.

While changing our water drinking habits is not easy and not always pleasant, it is well worth! Feeling more alert, better concentration, better sleep, clearer skin, being energized and general feeling of well-being will accompany that your cells get more water to function!

So drink it up!
