The term ‘brain health’ literally gets millions of searches on web every year. Millions! People are looking for ways to keep their brain “fit” to keep Alzheimer’s at bay, to keep sharp and alert, to improve memory, to learn faster, to retain more information, and on and on and on. Herbal supplements that are targeted for brain health are flying off the shelf as people see them as a quick fix to improve their brain function. And perhaps these supplements do as advertised and help to lift that ‘fuzzy’ thinking that one often feels as they age.

“Brain Games” are also very popular among those who want to keep their brain at its best. Cross-word puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, even Jigsaw Puzzles are known to help improve brain health.

What is truly amazing though, is that the single most good that one can do for their brain is something so simple, and yet something that many people completely disregard. That one thing is to get a good night’s sleep, every night. You can do everything right — eat a healthy diet, do physical exercise regularly, engage in brain fitness exercises and yet, if you do not get enough sleep, good, restful sleep, all of that could be for naught.

In order to perform ordinary, every day functions well, activities such as driving, cooking, working, shopping, exercising, and maintaining healthy relationships, all require adequate sleep. Then of course there are those not-ordinary days that really push your brain to the limit.

Research has shown that when a person is sleep-deprived, parts of the brain actually shut down and the brain is required to shift the most necessary activities to another part of the brain. Although this is certainly a marvel, the reality is that the brain works much harder and accomplishes much less when a person is sleep-deprived. For those who have very stressful lives, the problem is compounded.

So, the number one way to maintain top brain health is to make sure that you get adequate, restful sleep every night. Nine hours is best, falling asleep at approximately the same time every night and waking at approximately the same time every morning.

Once you have a good sleep routine established, incorporating a good healthy diet, physical exercise, mental stimulation, will all work together to ensure optimum health.

If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, you can see where this could adversely affect your brain health. And here’s to a healthy brain!
