Wheatgrass Shot  -  The Fountain Of Youth

I had a friend in Hungary, who kept a tray of wheatgrass in their kitchen. I always thought they were nuts eating grass. Her husband was a body builder and worked out every day. That was just going too far for me although I was swimming myself every day but that is different, so I thought!

I have been juicing for close to thirty years now. I still have my first juicer, a compact little German juicer, a good Braun that was shipped in a container with all my belongings to Australia.

Lately, I decided to increase my fresh juice intake and invested into a bigger capacity juicer.

I found a few great pages on Facebook that are big advocates of juicing like Dan The Life Generator and The Juice Man, Jay Kordich, who himself is ninety year old and has been juicing for sixty years. Incredible! The more I read the more I felt the desire to focus more on vegetable juicing and cut back a little on the fruit juices. Years ago I found the taste of all vegetable juice pretty hard to accept but it is amazing how much our taste buds can be educated! I also figured out that if I add a whole lemon and a piece of ginger to every juice, I pretty much can drink anything! If this is still too strong for you, I recommend to add one green apple to make it taste great! Now there isn't a vegetable, including the Asian ones that I don't juice. And I am loving it!

I am sure you guessed that buying chemical free produce is the best, even for juicing. However, not everyone can afford it. The local market is a good place to get local and home grown produce with less chemicals used. The lemon you use as most experts would recommend to include the peel of the lemon, make sure is organic or take off the peel and don't use it in your juice. You might have friends who have lemon tree growing in their garden and happily share with you their lemons.

Just to give you a few ideas, amongst others I juice kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, carrot, beetroot, parsley, broccoli, parsnip, Bok-choy, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, radish, daikon, peppers, sweet potato, fennel, turnip and add ginger and lemon to this in any combination. Sometimes I mix many of them, other times just do a few of them. Whatever I have at home and whatever I feel like.

My routine is that I juice a liter and I drink half of it in the morning and the other half I put in a glass jar with a lid and keep it in the fridge and drink it in the evening. There are days when as a break I have a fruit juice like an all pineapple with ginger or pineapple and grapefruit combination. Again, I juice most of the fruits when I feel like fruit juice. I listen to my body what it wants and that makes it so much fun shopping and juicing. One of my favourite in summer is watermelon. So refreshing! There are plenty of books and websites for recipes and nutritional information on fruit and vegetables. I enjoy knowing the benefits of the juice I am drinking and adding ingredients according to their nutritional values. However, nothing beats a great tasting juice!

I don't mix fruit with vegetable for juicing. If you are a beginner, choose fruits you like then ease into carrot, apple, ginger, lemon juice. Be gentle and watch your body's reaction. Just start with the combination of 1-3 things you like and go for flavour. That way you will enjoy your juice more so you will stick with it longer. Once the changes start taking place and you feel the benefits of daily juicing it becomes a habit.

My experience with juicing is that I don't get hungry when I have a half a liter juice during the morning. Try not to drink it all at once but drink a glass then when you are hungry get another glass. I like to mix a tablespoonful of Chia seed into my first glass of juice. If you leave it for a few minutes soaked into your juice, it gets jelly like and swells up. It has lots of great nutrition in it, including protein and Chia seed is great for improving digestion! Chia contains Omega 3, fibre, protein and it is a great antioxidant so it really helps to kick-start your system after the night of fasting. Vitamins and minerals in the juice get better absorbed when you add good fats like Omega 3.

You will get benefits, whatever you juice. The nutrients from the fresh juice get into your blood stream very quickly and you will feel an almost immediate energy hit. You truly can get high from juicing! The mental clarity, the energy and the great skin that you get from long term juicing is worth everything! Depending on your state of health if you keep up the juicing many other things will improve as well. One of the greatest advantage of juicing is that it helps to alkalize the body. There is a growing camp that believes that certain diseases can only develop in an acidic body. So if this is true, alkalizing the body and getting the necessary nutrition to our cells only can be beneficial.

My personal experience is that when people develop proper body awareness, they feel what is good for them. Whatever we do, we want positive changes. If your health, fitness and how you feel is not improving, your are getting sicker. Unfortunately, too many people put up with being tired, getting a few colds a year, feeling lethargic and in general lacking energy. They don't understand that these are very serious warning signs that their health is going down the slope. It is long time before the instruments and testing system of our Western Medicine pick up diseases. When they do, the only solution is to cut or poison. For that time it is far too late. Making serious lifestyle changes and radical changes in our eating habits can prevent or even reverse a lot of things if we don't wait too long, before it's too late. Be smart. We only have one life.

There is a great Organic shop close to me where I do most of my shopping. Just recently the new owner re-organized the shop and created a little corner for a juice bar. They sell wheatgrass by the tray and they also have the slow juicer to make wheatgrass shots.

The first taste of a real wheatgrass shot can be a shock to the system. However, once you teach your taste buds to accept this taste, you will discover that wheatgrass has quite a sweet taste and a silky smoothness. I always order a triple shot just to get maximum benefit. I try to get it whenever I am in the area. I have tried to include in my green juice at home but the wheatgrass is quite a tough grass and it killed my blender and my juicer did not like it either so I gave up doing it at home. You really need a special slow or manual juicer for the wheatgrass to get the best out of the grass.

Drinking wheatgrass shots has lots of benefits. One of the most important seems to be the goodness of chlorophyll which helps to cleanse and oxygenate the blood. It increases red blood-cell count, helps reducing inflammation and removes toxins from the body just to name a few obvious benefits. When our cells get proper cell-food, the body restores its health then starts rejuvenating itself. That's why people start looking younger when they make positive changes in their eating habits and start exercising.

Keeping a tray of live wheatgrass near your bed may also enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help improve your sleep.

Set your health goals and monitor how you are improving every couple of months. Make sure that your health is improving and that you are looking younger, no matter what age you are. Taking pictures of yourself gives you a pretty good feedback on what is happening regading your antiaging journey!

I recently started juicing daily too. Right now my favourite is beet-apple-dandelion greens with lemon and ginger. Those are the ingredients that I can pick wild these days (except for the lemon and the ginger)!

I am juicing as well but i only started 6 month ago after i saw "Fat, sick and nearly dead". You said that you juice a liter and drink half in the morning and half in the afternoon. Aren't we suppose to drink the juice in no more than 20 minutes after we make it? Because after 20 min it's oxidizing and has no nutritional value whatsoever?
