On just about every label of every product you read, it will indicate that it is a good source of antioxidants. Why are antioxidants good for you? What are they and how can they keep you healthy and young-looking?
Antioxidants are molecules that tame and neutralize the effects of other molecules in your body which seek to cause damage, also known as free radicals. The main purpose for getting more of them into your body is to fight free radical damage, which are known to cause all kinds of illnesses and diseases.
Free radicals are always present in your body. Free radicals are the result, or by-product, of the natural process of oxidation in your body. When you put fuel into your body (eat) and your body processes this fuel, it combines with oxygen that is present in the body. When that happens, it is known as oxidation.
You have seen the effects of oxidation when you see a rusty car or a piece of fruit that turns brown once the air (oxygen) comes in contact with it. Believe it or not, the same thing is happening in your body. If oxidation causes a car to rust (or look old), know that your body is experiencing the same thing. Unlike a rusty old car, you cannot trade your body in for a brand new model! Hence the importance of antioxidants for you.
Free radicals also come from contact with outside sources such as overexposure to sun, pollution, smoke and some radiation levels.
It is impossible not to have free radicals present in your body at all times. The secret is to control, prevent and reduce the amount of damage these free radicals are allowed to cause in your body.
The good news is that by increasing the level of antioxidants in your body, you are arming yourself with what you need to slow down, fight off and prevent the damage that can be caused by these free radicals. Antioxidants work to neutralize these free radicals, thereby making you healthier in every way.
What specific health concerns can antioxidants help to slow down or prevent? Some of them are listed below -
- Prevention of heart disease, strokes
- Prevention of various types of cancer
- Boost Immune system
- Healthy cell production
- Memory and brain function
- Healthy eyes
- Bones and Joints
- Slow down the aging process
Virtually every area of your body will function better with more antioxidants to fight with.
It makes sense because your body contains millions of cells and if you have stable, healthy cells throughout your body, you will be healthier. When your body is working properly, you will naturally feel and look better.
You will have more energy, you are more vibrant, and when that happens, you feel and act younger than your age!
Talk to someone who is in poor health. The biggest thing they miss are the days when they felt good and were able to enjoy the things they used to be able to do. As you age, your body starts slowing down. If antioxidants can help slow this process down, my advice would be to take full advantage of it.
