Why Meditate Daily?

My first meditation experience was when I was twenty something...I just finished my studies at the Academy of Music and moved back to my home town, Kecskemet in Hungary. In the cultural and community center there were many different courses people could attend. For whatever reason, I joined the yoga class. Andras Sarkozy, a male teacher was our teacher. The room was a bright, clean and neat, well ventilated room. I remember this well because since that I have been doing yoga in much worse conditions here in Australia. Unfortunately, this is true even for school and work conditions but this is another article...

Now, thirty years later, I need to write a few words of appreciation about Andras, our yoga teacher. He not only was a fantastic, well balanced and excellent yoga teacher but a well-rounded person in every way. Even nowadays, a male yoga teacher is quite unusual in many parts of the world. But thirty years back and in Hungary!!! Wow, now I know how rare that was! I hope one day I will have a chance to ask him how he started yoga and what led him to teach yoga to others!

Those yoga classes led by Andras Sarkozy opened the path to a life-long love and practice of yoga and meditation. It taught me to quiet my mind, to body-mind-soul and heart awareness, to watch what I eat and look after my body. He taught me how important flexibility is, in every way! Flexibility of the body, flexibility of the mind, flexibility of our thinking and in our approach to life in general.

Being a choir singer from a very early age of childhood, I understand the importance of breathing and getting fresh oxygen in the body. Yoga breathing strengthened my technique then swimming further extended my practice. I became very aware of how shallow people's breathing is normally. I think this cause a lot of health problems in the general population.

Quieting our minds in our fast paced world is a big issue. We are constantly surrounded by noise, music and visual stimulation. Most people can't and afraid of staying put, turn inside and stay alone with their own busy mind. Because of that, they never learn to deal with those thoughts chasing each other. They never can empty their head and find peace. No wonder people become neurotic and depressed. Just too much is going on in there head all the time. There is nowhere to hide!

When you can't look inside how could you look outside and see what is out there?

We are running all the time and everywhere. This approach alone is wrong. Even if you have a lot on, try to slow down time and imagine that you can fit everything in your day. Just changing your approach about time will slow down the passing of the day and takes away some of the stress you put on yourself.

Through meditation practice we become more coherent, integrated and purposeful at all levels of behavior and in our achievement of self-fulfillment.

"If the mind is tranquil and occupied with positive thoughts, the body will not easily fall prey to disease." - said the Dalai Lama. Our mind is wired into our body. Meditation is an effective way to manage stress, preventing heart disease, boosting the immune system even to the extent of helping combat different forms of cancer. Meditation has been shown to lower biological age.

Meditation is probably the best chance you have got to combat stress, cultivate happiness, enhance your performance, realize your goals and attain mastery of your mental, emotional and material destiny. Find a good teacher and give it a go! You will love it! However, a word of warning. It won't be easy at the beginning but it is worth persevering!

Chip, yoga and meditation is incredible! There are new researches that show that athletes get less injuries when they add yoga stretching. Most gym junkies bulk up but lacking flexibility! Meditation seriously improves mental capacity and focus. All my yoga teachers look amazing and friends who meditate just don't seem to show age like others! I love it! :)
