Some people, who have never had a bit of problem in all their life, suddenly begin having panic attacks. It can be over whelming: you don’t know what is going on, especially the first time. You don’t understand what caused it, so even after it’s over, you can be in almost constant fear of having another one. The anxiety from this fear is so strong that it often feels as if this fear itself could bring on another one.
During the attack, it seems to take over both your mind and body, and can be quite terrifying. Some of the symptoms are so intense that people often wonder if they are going to survive. People around you might not know what to do, and so might add to the anxiety of the situation.
The good news is, panic attacks always end, the bad news is that they can last anywhere for a few minutes, to over an hour.
Here are 5 signs/symptoms of a panic attack:
1.) A racing heart. When having an attack, your heartbeat can go way up. You may be very conscious of how loud your heartbeat sounds, and that it might sound like it is irregular. This can be a very scary thing. 2.) Shortness of breath: You may feel as if you can't catch your breath, or as if there isn't enough "air in the air". This could make you feel as if you're not getting enough oxygen, and might pass out. 3.) A feeling like you have lost control of your mind and body. Some people even think they might be going "crazy". This is from your fear-level rising because of the attack, and can become a "vicious circle" getting worse as the attack goes on. 4.) Feeling dizzy or having the shakes. This is often as the attack subsides, and after it's over. It might feel as if you have low blood sugar, or like you've just finished running a marathon. You might feel as if you need to lie down for a while and rest. 5.) Being very tired. After an anxiety attack, you may feel completely wiped out, and feel as if you are unable to complete even the smallest task.
These symptoms, each on their own can be very scary. Taken all together, and they can be overwhelming, especially the first time it happens. Always remember: People do not die from panic attacks.
Also remember that knowledge is power. The more you learn and understand about panic attacks, the better able you are able to learn what you need to do to conquer them.
