Are You Relying on Medications to Cure Your Anxiety?

In a world of quick fixes and instant gratification, many people are relying on medications to cure their anxiety and panic attacks, but at what cost?

Did you know the most prescribed psychiatric medication in America in recent years is also one of the most addictive? The most prescribed drug, Alprazolam was responsible for 44 million prescriptions in America alone during 2010.

You might say: "Big deal, that's 44 million happy people".

Drugs like this are not meant for long-term use, and what your doctor doesn't tell you until it's usually too late is that they are highly addictive and dangerous. Depending on who you ask, that could be 44 million really unhappy people going through some bad withdrawals.

But I digress.

Not all things that exist in the world are meant to have a quick and easy fix. Sometimes there are problems that exist that must be worked out without altering brain chemistry and body chemicals.

So the question is: Are you relying too much on medications to cure your anxiety?

It is important to remember that people don't usually become anxious overnight, and so it stands to reason that you will not likely be cured overnight. If you choose to take a pill to solve your problems, you may not end up cured at all.

The only real cure for anxiety and panic attacks is behavioral therapy, something which cannot be found in any sized bottle. By retraining your mind to react to situations differently, you can learn very quickly how to recognize anxiety for what it is and dismiss it for what it isn't.

There are uses for medications in anxious people though. For very short-term use, it is acceptable to try medications in order to be able to function. Many people develop such severe anxiety and panic attacks that taking a medication will outweigh the risks. But this is going to be for a very short time, as behavioral therapy will always be the better bet for long-term relief.

In the end though, there are two choices to make if you suffer from an anxiety disorder. You can get some relief now from a medication or you can find some kind of alternative therapy now.

The only difference will be in your future. If you choose the medication route you will have to set aside some time in your future to deal with a withdrawal process that is quite unpleasant.

If you choose some type of behavioral therapy now to treat anxiety and panic attacks, you can set aside some time in your future to enjoy your life and do the things that you may be missing out on now.

The choice is yours. The quick fix or the right one?
