Dealing With Social Anxiety - Common Social Anxiety Treatments

Do you suffer with social anxiety and feel like there's no help available?

If so then you couldn't be more wrong! Sure you may be one of the millions who suffers with social anxiety but there is certainly help available.

The first step in treating social anxiety is to determine if you're socially anxious to begin with.

How do I know if I'm experiencing social anxiety or shyness?

Common things that will trigger anxieties in a person suffering with social anxiety are;

  • Intense fear of being made fun of/ humiliated
  • Fear of interacting with new people (extreme shyness)
  • Fear of being singled out and made to feel the center of attention
  • Fear of authoritative figures such such as bosses, police, inspectors
  • Fear of being watched and judged by others
  • Fear of social gatherings and new social environments

If you can relate to any of the symptoms above then you're more than likely experiencing social anxiety. It's certainly nothing to worry about to much, there are a number of treatments available for dealing with social anxiety.

The most common and probably most successful form of treatment is CBT (cognitive-behavior therapy). CBT helps to address the triggers and behaviors associated with your social anxiety, it is very effective as it tackles the root problem.

CBT can help you to change behaviors and the way you think and interact in social environments. It is available in either one-on-one sessions of group sessions dependent on your needs. The biggest benefit of CBT is that it produces long-term results and is definitely worth considering if social anxiety is interfering with your everyday life.

Another common form of treatment for social anxiety are prescription medications which i'm not a huge fan of. Anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and beta-blockers are the most common of forms of prescription medications for treating social anxiety and anxieties in general.

The downside to prescription medications are the possible side-effects and the fact that most generally take a few weeks to actually start taking effect. Please also bear in mind that no prescription medication was designed as a long-term solution! If you're going to take medication then they should be part of an ongoing form of treatment.

For those who don't wish to seek the advice of their GP or a specialist there are a number of programs available designed to help you deal with your social anxiety. The Shyness & Social Anxiety System is a popular work-book by Sean Cooper which offers some usable techniques for dealing with social anxiety.

It all depends on how much it interferes with your life. If you feel that social anxiety is getting in the way of your daily life then it's best to seek the advice of your GP.
