How To Deal With Anxiety

Does it feel like every time you turn around there’s another disaster, such as the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan and which also affected Hawaii and California? Thousands of lives were affected. And there has been political turmoil in Egypt and Lybia recently, causing extremely violent conditions and much uncertainty throughout the world. So what can you do to deal with this intense anxiety? What alternative steps could you take?

As ridiculous as this may sound, one effective way to prevent anxiety is to avoid reaching a conclusion. What does that mean? Try to look at a situation and acknowledge, “yes this has happened,” and initially keep it as impersonal as you possibly can. This can be difficult when the media many times blows things way out of proportion and presents the news in a manner that contributes to those overwhelming emotions you experience. But if you look at the situation and ask to yourself, “how does it get any better than this” or “what else is possible,” that in itself can keep you out of the turmoil. It may also allow other solutions to come into place.

What other solutions, you may ask. You might think of something that indeed could improve the situation. Maybe you have resources that could help or know people that could be a contribution. Or perhaps by you staying calm and not adding your anxiety to the negative energy that has already been created by others, the intensity of the situation may dissipate sooner. As more and more people keep this calm and peaceful state, more positive solutions can be discovered.

Think about the times when you have been upset and tried to “figure out” what to do. Not many ideas came forward, right? But what about the times when you were in the shower or just ready to fall asleep and a solution to a problem just “popped” into your head. That resulted due to the fact you were in that calm and peaceful state. You didn’t have the emotional turmoil blocking your creative juices.

Give it a try the next time a newscaster tells you “oh what a terrible thing this is.” Take a deep breath, look him or her straight in the eye and say to yourself “how does it get any better than this and what else is possible?” You can repeat these questions over and over as required.
