I Have Anxiety - Now What? Don\'t Hit The Panic Button

So you might think that the title of this article is a joke or a pun. You have an anxiety disorder, don't hit the panic button. Ha ha. Unless, of course, you have an anxiety disorder. Let me tell you, I have anxiety. And as someone who has struggled with this issue for 40 years, that the most annoying words to anyone with an anxiety disorder are "just relax", "don't panic","why don't you just stop worrying" and "stop overreacting?"

So if you have been diagnosed with anxiety, this introduction may touch on one of the most difficult things that you will need to deal with and that is that most likely many of your family and friends just "don't get it". They don't understand that your anxiety is not the result of a personality defect or a penchant for the dramatic. Your anxiety disorder is actually a diagnosable and treatable disorder, an illness as real as diabetes. Just like suffering from diabetes, generalized anxiety disorders will most likely never completely go away, but what you can and must learn to do is manage it effectively so that it's effect on your life is minimal.

So if you are finding yourself admitting to yourself and other people "I have anxiety" here are some of the things you need to do. Dealing with anxiety can be tough, but it is not unmanageable.

First, become educated. In the last 20 years or so the has been a lot of new research regarding generalized anxiety disorder. Educate yourself and your family so that they understand what you are going through and how they can support you.

Second, let yourself off the hook. Seriously. I am going to go all zen on you and just tell you "it is what it is". It really doesn't matter how or why you have an anxiety disorder. You have it. (wait - exception here if you have a phobia. If you have an irrational fear of something it can be really helpful to find out why you are afraid...then a professional can help you fix that!) Let yourself off the hook. Would you be all judgemental if you had multiple sclerosis? No. This is the same. Likely even if you get over your initial bout of anxiety and learn to manage it well, you may find that your symptoms of anxiety may resurface at different times of your life (often when you least expect it). You are going to have to love yourself without judgement and except "today I am nervous. It is what it is. I got through it before, I'll get through it again".

Third, seek treatment. Only a medical professional can truly diagnose and treat an anxiety disorder. Whether or not you decide to take medication for a short period until you can get your symptoms of anxiety under control is something you and a doctor will have to decide together. However, thousands of people have learned how to reduce anxiety naturally and how to regain control of their lives without drugs. From holisitic approaches to meditation and relaxation techniques specifically for anxiety, there are lots of effective ways of dealing with anxiety.

So please be sure to get the help you need. There is no need to suffer. And next time someone tells you not to hot the panic button, please refer them to this article. Go ahead and feel free to hit "like" now and share it with your friends and family today!
