Life is Stressful - But How Much Anxiety Is Too Much? Learn If You Are You Suffering From Symptoms Of Anxiety

Everybody knows the joke - the number one anxiety producing situation that people list in their fears is public speaking. Fear of speaking in public out ranks fear of dying for many people. So as the joke goes, more people would rather be at their own funeral, than deliver a speech at a friend's. When you thin of it, it's not actually that funny. But it does ring true for many of us.

Fear of public speaking, as far as anxieties go, is pretty normal. When looking at anxiety disorders it's important to remember that some anxiety in life is normal, and serves a healthy function. The anxiety we feel when genuinely threatened can motivate us and keep us safe (that's our "fight or flight" instinct). Anxiety we feel at the thought of jumping out of a plane or driving in icy conditions, this is healthy, normal anxiety. It's part of our biological make up. But it's when this same level of anxiety is experienced for so called "normal" activities (extreme example, leaving the house, or veering from our everyday routine) that anxiety becomes a problem. When your every day activities and responsibilities start suffering as a result of your anxiety, then it is time to get professional help.

When trying to determine if your level of anxiety is "normal" or not, it's important to look at stress in general. Stress is different from anxiety and stress is part of every day life. Stress is usually situational. You are caught in traffic and are running late, you have to study for a test, you have an extra busy work load at your job or you are over scheduled and over busy. These are all stressful situations. When the stressful period is over, you are not stressed any more. Anxiety is different from stress in that often times the person suffering from anxiety can not identify or articulate the exact source of their anxiety. If they can (for example, they are afraid of flying or afraid of the dentist) then that's more in the realm of a phobia, not anxiety. Phobias are situational also. As in the previous examples. So if you're not flying, or you are not at the dents you are not panicking.

People suffering from generalized anxiety often experience symptoms for no real apparent reason. They are often times taken aback by the severity of their symptoms as they occur "out of the blue". Generalized anxiety has as a symptom a non specific sense of foreboding or fear that something bad is going to happen. Again, if you have an earthquake phobia you are afraid to go out under certain conditions when you think their might be an earthquake. If you suffer from generalized anxiety you don't know why you are anxious about going somewhere. You are anxious something bad will happen, but you often can't say what. The big exception to this, of course, is people who have suffered one or more panic or anxiety attacks.

If you have been unfortunate enough to have experienced an anxiety or panic attack then much of your generalized anxiety will revolve around fear of having another attack. So, for example, if you had a panic attack in a specific location you will be anxious about returning there for fear of duplicating the circumstances. Unfortunately some people learn pretty soon that this anxiety starts to seep into other areas of their life. People who suffer from anxiety often find that they start to restrict their outings and activities more and more for fear of having a panic attack, and their world seems to get "smaller and smaller".

If you fear suspect that you or someone you love if suffering from more than "everyday stress" and is suffering symptoms of anxiety, then you should definitely look at getting professional help and input. Anxiety is a real disease, with real treatment options. It is not simply a "personality type" or a defect. Many different options, including many natural cures for anxiety, are available and there is no reason for you to suffer unnecessarily. Please take steps to learn more and feel better.

Some people who have anxiety attacks also suffer from depression. Many of the medications for depression also help with anxiety. Therefore, people who suffer from anxiety may want to take a simple quiz to see whether depression may be related to their anxiety problems. I take medication for depression, and I was taking medication for anxiety. I had a lot of anxiety when I was taking care of Mom, because she needed 24/7 care, and her moods changed frequently. I agree anxiety can be situational. I accepted the fact I had an anxiety-inducing situation. I prayed for God's peace. Talking with other people about difficult situations can be helpful as long as you are willing to put the situation aside so you don't focus on that situation all the time.
