Medication to Cure Panic Attacks?

The idea some people have that you need to take drugs to cure panic attacks, is actually not true. The fact is that they don't cure anxiety or panic at all. Why? They don't get to the actual cause or reason why the attacks began in the first place. Welcome to the common denominator between many an anxiety and panic sufferer.

Some Information About Anxiety and Panic Medications

  • The vast majority of drugs for anxiety and panic have one main task to complete in your body. That job is to slow down your central nervous system. Many, if not all of these, are also very addictive.
  • You have to take them in accurate doses, taking into account factors such as your weight or other medications you may be taking. Patients usually start off on a low dose and the general idea is that they are only to be used as a short term measure. Yet people end up on these medications for years.
  • Medications are not a cure for anxiety or panic. They are a means to relax and keep you calmer. Many are still classed as potentially being able to cause drowsiness, and are better off just being taken at night.
  • An important point to note is once you are on them, especially for very long periods of time, you can't just suddenly stop taking them either. You have to gradually cut down your dosage. And then guess what happens? Unfortunately, you find out just how badly you still suffer from anxiety/panic attacks!

My Personal Experience

As someone who was put on a certain type of medication for several weeks, year ago, I can certainly attest to the relief that it brought. It was wonderful not being so anxious about a certain situation in my life. The other issue though, of not feeling comfortable leaving my home, prevailed.

Regardless of any relief, the important point to note is that it was only temporary relief. Upon being taken off my prescription, I was back to facing up to the real world and dealing with the causes of why I had anxiety and mild panic in the first place! Definitely not a cure. More like a covering up, or masking of underlying issues that still had to be dealt with. My poor doctor back then, could only work with what his training taught him. He, like countless others around the world, did his best for his patient.

My Views on the Rise of Anxiety and Panic Medications

That was a very different time. The exploration of our minds and how they worked was commonly referred to as "the mind body connection", it was also a time of the rise and recognition (big time) of the role that stress played in our lives.

Many of us began working longer hours. Some of us faced massive mortgage interest rates, job security became an issue and so on. Subsequently anxiety and panic reared their ugly heads front and center at us. They yelled at an unsuspecting, modern world "We're here! Catch us if you can!"

For years, we couldn't. Our medical world didn't have the skills to deal with these two nasty critters. So instead they were muffled. They were pacified. Quietened down and given forty winks sleep occasionally, with a doze of drugs a couple of times a day. Sufferers embraced the respite from the daily intrusions of an attack or three.

The Times, They-are-a-Changing!

Nowadays, we have more and more doctors coming out of the "clinical big pharma woods" and to their credit (thank you!) challenging the use of many types of medications for long term use. They view the use of these drugs as for temporary use, whilst other means of treatment are sought. Some doctors just go straight to these other methods when safe to and completely bypass reaching for the prescription pad. Alternative natural treatments were not in abundance the way they are now. They are also not frowned upon as much either. In other words, many wonderful doctors are now looking towards them as they recognize that drugs are not a cure for anxiety and panic.

A few common methods of healing used now include -

  • Professional help from psychologists, therapists and counselors and
  • Learning correct thought techniques and mindful breathing.

Medical professionals identify with the fact that whatever is causing the attacks, must be dealt with at a root level and that the mind and body are not "separate" as once thought. Instead we find that the bridge between conventional and alternative treatments is rapidly closing.

I for one, welcome their joint advancement!

My daughter had a group of friends and most of them were on anti depressants, they gave her some and I ended up in the emergency room with her. She continued taking them thinking they weren't helping so she overdosed. All turned out well she found new friends and she is now anti drugs. WHEW! God is good. Thank for sharing Kymee

What a relief it all worked out in the end Kymee, for you all. One has to question why so many in one group would be on medication. Either "herd mentality" , easy to get or an "incident" of sorts, had affected them collectively in some way. And yes He is!

The amount of kids taking these drugs really is sad. It really is easy for them to get them. Parents are allowing Doctors to prescribe them so freely, Our Doctor tried with us, but we refused.

Staggering Kymee! Did you notice John's comment below? I'm in Australia and we're not at this level yet. But as you know what starts in the USA often spins out to other parts of the globe. This is something I don't want to see. Good for you for taking a stand.

He is correct and you are right it is very sad. Another problem we have here is that parents are locking up the pain meds. The opium based ones are causing many teens to get hooked on heroine.

Hello Annie, great article. I agree that natural has to be best. I was put on so many meds when my son, mother, friend, brother & my best friend passed away within a very short time. Each time something happened a new drug was introduced or the dosage was pushed up. I was a Walking Zombie and a car driving Zombie. Then last Spring I was rushed to the hospital. I had a terrible drug interaction. I almost died and that was a hug wake up call. Nothing is best . It took me months to get back to myself..

What an awful experience for you Betty. I cannot imagine the grief you went through. I went thought many traumatic events, after the initial one I briefly mentioned above, but I refused to go on meds again. I thought it better to just get everything sorted out via other means. I really hope that you are healing as best you can Betty. God bless.

Yes, Annie, I have done the grieving I didn't do before. I have come to terms with all of it for the most part. The lost of a child is so difficult. I have joined a wonderful website group that has helped me a great deal. They have no idea.

You are right. Here in the States the abuse of legal drugs is skyrocketing. They prescribe PROZAC for children, for crying out loud.

John, I couldn't imagine giving some types of drugs to children. I shudder to think of what it could be doing to their developing brains and bodies. If there were no other option than this, then maybe. If it were my child, I'd go down every other possible avenue in the book to find another way. As adults, long term use is crazy, never mind a child.

I do not think that drugs cure anxiety and panic disorder. They do help to relieve the symptoms and to some extent normalize the sufferer. However I think that a long term improvement is obtained by psychological therapy. This type of treatment helps the sufferer to address patterns of thought that cause anxiety and panic attacks.

I agree Mark. Nothing is better than getting to the cause of anxiety and panic and releasing it. Our thoughts are paramount to how we deal with anxiety and panic. It's not always easy to practice what we learn from alternative treatment. However the freedom from excessive worry, etc is worth the effort five times over.

Well said and well written. Natural ways are permanent. Medication can only give you relief temporarily.

Annie, good article - I enjoyed reading it. My mother, who passed away a few years ago, suffered terribly with anxiety in her early 50s., which for her was a precursor to depression. For 4 years she also battled agoraphobia - fear of open spaces and leaving her home. That's when the doctors put her on anti-anxiety medication. So I can relate to your article. I agree, today, there are alternatives, but those were not as popular back then. ~ Jude

Like your article so I posted on Facebook, I can relate to the issue relating to anxiety as my sister went through that at a younger age. Gone through all that addictive medication, but thank God through meditation and self control she has managed to clear all that up. Now she is a medium clairvoyant natural healer and helps women with all sorts of issues.
