With anxiety disorder on the rise these days, there seems to be no end to the drugs that are prescribed for this problem, or the lengthy list of “possible” side effects that accompanies each one of them. And at the same time, more and more people seem to be turning away from conventional drugs and searching for alternative, natural remedies for anxiety.

Natural remedies are really nothing new. Over the generations families have passed down recipes for various concoctions to cure everything from arthritis to migraines to the common cold. Most people don’t know this, but many of the common medications that are sold these days are just synthetic copies of various natural ingredients.

With the popularity of these natural therapies and remedies increasing every day, it’s not surprising that people are developing even more uses for herbs and other natural ingredients. There seems to be natural therapies and treatments for just about everything that you can imagine.

Here are just a few of the natural remedies for anxiety:

Aromatherapy It’s widely believed that the scents of certain essential oils have a strong calming and soothing effect that will help alleviate anxiety.  Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Juniper, and Cinnamon are just a few of the many essential oils that are believed to have calming and healing effects.

Herbal Remedies Some herbal remedies for anxiety consist of Valerian (a natural sedative), Bugleweed (for calming nerves), Ginkgo Biloba (a mood enhancer), and Kava Kava (to promote sleep). There are many more herbs, like these, that are thought to provide healing benefits – some you probably know and some I’ll bet you’ve never heard of.

Homeopathy Homeopathic cures consist of a wide range of specific treatments for various sources of anxiety. There’s Aconitum (also known as wolfsbane) for anxiety brought on by a sudden shock or fear, Gelsemium (Yellow Jessamine) for performance anxiety, and Ignatia (named for St. Ignatius - the patron saint of spiritual retreats) for anxiety brought on by severe grief. Once again, these are only a few examples.

And here are a few more conventional natural remedies for anxiety:

Exercise Recent scientific studies have shown that exercise, particularly higher intensity exercise, can greatly reduce stress levels and elevate your mood. When done regularly, it can have a lasting effect.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Omega 3s offer tremendous benefits to physical well being. In particular, they can act as a mood stabilizer. The most common sources of Omega 3s are fish and flaxseeds. Fish is the best source, and you can quickly get your daily dose by taking fish oil or cod liver oil supplements.  Other important supplements to treat anxiety are vitamin B and magnesium.

Meditation A great way to relieve anxiety is to learn relaxation techniques. Meditation is probably the most widely practiced method, but there are others as well.  Meditation can help you relax your mind and body and relieve you of those troublesome thoughts and feelings that accompany anxiety.

As you can see, there are many natural remedies for anxiety, as well as just about every other ailment and disorder under the sun. Some believe strongly in the healing benefits of these natural treatments, while others remain skeptical.

As a word of caution, please be careful about anything that you ingest. Just because something is natural does not mean that it can’t harm you. Even certain vitamin and mineral supplements can be harmful in large enough doses.
