We have discussed the devastation a panic attack can have on a sufferer of the disorder in previous posts. From fear for your physical health, thinking that you are having a heart attack or even worse that you are going to die, to questioning your mental health with thoughts that you are going insane etc.

Now add to all of this the fact that you are suffering panic attacks whilst pregnant… Without panic, being pregnant is already a very stressful period. As the mother, you will be taking every precaution to ensure the safety of your unborn child eg eating wholesome foods and removing alcohol and smoking from your lifestyle. Panic attacks during pregnancy will turn what should be a wonderful period in most mothers lives into one of the most stressful periods of their lives. Figures show that up to 10% of pregnant women experience panic attacks.

Pregnancy Panic Attack Symptoms

Panic attack symptoms during pregnancy remain the same as at any other time.

They include -

Shortness of breath.

Shaking throughout the body.

Chest pain.

Rapid heart beat.

Women who have had experience of panic attacks before their pregnancy are more likely to experience panic attacks during pregnancy. However some women find that during pregnancy their historical experiences with panic attacks disappear.

Women who have never suffered panic attacks have started experiencing them once becoming pregnant.

Causes of Panic Attack Whilst Pregnant

Hormone Changes – It is believed that some women will respond to the fluctuating hormone levels experienced during pregnancy differently, to other pregnant women resulting in them experiencing panic attacks.

Genetics – It is also believed that panic attacks can be genetically passed through the family. Research has found that there is usually more than one sufferer of panic attacks within a family.

Pregnancy anxiety - The anxiety of being pregnant due to the huge responsibility felt by the mother to ensure the well-being of the unborn child can manifest into panic attacks.

Will panic attack harm the unborn baby – It is thought that panic attacks will cause no harm to the unborn baby. However you should be aware that you could pass on issues relating to the anxiety you felt during pregnancy to the child when it is born. This could affect the child in their later years.

How to Manage Panic Attacks During Pregnancy

Firstly you must remember that people are going to worry about the health of their unborn child whether they suffer with panic attacks or not. You must also try to acknowledge that you suffer with anxiety issues and these worries you are experiencing are more than likely to be caused by the said issues.

To remain relaxed during pregnancy follow these simple to apply techniques -

Research Panic – Ensure you have a complete knowledge of how panic attacks work, especially on how panic attacks work with you. Then through learning some of the simple to apply techniques eg breathing exercises, you will be better placed to react to future attacks.

Attend All Session with Medical Services – Having health professionals give you an update on how your unborn child is doing can only help to keep the negative thoughts at bay.

Relaxation Techniques – Try breathing exercises, aromatherapy, going for a walk and meditation. Modify eating habits such as removing sugar and caffeine from your diet and make a conscious effort to eat healthily. Implement these very easy to apply techniques into your daily life and you will see a positive affect on your panic attacks.
