Relaxation Training

A relaxation technique also called relaxation training represents any activity or procedure that helps one relax or get a state of increased calmness and decrease the levels of stress, anger or even anxiety. Relaxation techniques are well-known among other health benefits for decreasing muscle tension, slow the hearth and breathe rates and lowering the blood pressure. People tend to respond to stress in their own ways by becoming overwhelmed, depressed, angry or all three. Yoga, meditation or other techniques that include deep breathing or using one’s mind to visual a quiet, calm and beautiful place are proven techniques to ease the pressure from the muscles or move on from the depressive state in which an individual might be in.

Researchers show that removing stress from the equation helps to increase the overall health of an individual. Meditation was proven to have the most measurable effect on stress when performing it, so meditating 10 minutes per day can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Relaxation training is so important that in the 1970’s books on this topic started to hit the bestseller lists. After that researchers started to take an interest in the meditation and relaxation training forms. Not long after in the 1980’s they found clues that clearly indicated the direct ties between stress and health related issues. This research has been received with such a strong media attention that it made it to the New York Times paper in 1986.

Now, in the 21’st century relaxation techniques are a branch of complementary and alternative medicine or CAM, a healing practice that “does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine” and it based more on historical facts than strict evidence. Relaxation training can improve your overall health by reducing your stress and anxiety feelings, also being a common ingredient to many counseling programs designed to do just that. People find out that knowing how to relax is a valuable skill for handling forms of academic anxiety as well as many behavioral health problems and occupational stress.

But relaxation training can also be the cause of stress for some people. Breathing techniques in particular, because of the way we breathe, naturally, when it comes to relaxation we need to control our breathing, and sometimes one can have problems with that. For example forget to breath regularly, uneven breathing, shallow breathing, hyperventilating and so forth. Even with the tense and release techniques you can have some problems if you don’t maintain your calm. Because of stretching and breathing in the same time, you might forget to stretch, or even to breathe and of course I can see how that is annoying but you must remember you are only doing these exercises to relax your mind and body, not to bring more stress with the training.

So try to stay calm during your exercises, remember that not anyone can do it from the first try, I think no one can, and if the relaxation training techniques that you find are not working for you, try to find your own way to feel relaxed.
