Running And Anxiety

I have been running for over four decades, ouch—dating myself—an activity that has become a lifestyle providing me with many benefits and rewards. During those years, besides raising a family—disclosure-- my wife bore most of that responsibility, I was a commissioned salesperson in the communications industry. This required servicing an existing client base while growing the territory and meeting quotas, certainly a stressful atmosphere. Account Executive, that is what I was, is a nice title but an executive you are not. You’re a salesperson, a purveyor of product, services and solutions, a pitchman. Selling is a fun and fast environment, where anyone can succeed without having a fancy degree, but it’s also a stressful environment that can bestow a lot of anxiety. . I had always been into exercise but it was here that I began to pick up the pace and distance in my running entering 5 and 10k’s, then advancing to half and full marathons.I was enjoying the running with its competition and social aspects while at the same time meeting business prospects, at times it was like Chamber of Commerce meetings.

Though these are fun and wonderful aspects of running, the physical and mental effects on your body are truly life changing. I did not realize it at first, for I had taken up running initially, for weight control. Like a lot of guys after I married I began eating meals, full meals and putting on weight, a lot of it. I was seeking weight loss and my old body back but wound up with a new lifestyle that brought much more.

To understand how running can provide a relaxation technique and control for anxiety you have to look at the physical effects of a workout. Some stretching and loosening up prior to your run gets your legs and muscles ready, along with mental preparation for a workout. The run begins with a slow start-- works its way towards peak performance at a steady rate -- to finish with a hard push –ending with a cool down period. During this activity you have drawn in large amounts of oxygen expanding your lungs and to fuel this machine, your heart increased its work delivering blood to your extremities with this oxygen to keep those body parts moving. Also during this time your body has relieved stresses from over thinking, work, or relationships, there isn’t any room for this unnecessary baggage.

During the cool down, you mind and body relax, anxieties have been dissipated, providing you a feeling of accomplishment and well being. It has also burned calories, exercised muscles, increased your lung capacity, and lowered blood pressure, while managing the stresses that cause anxieties. Managing anxiety with running is natures way, without the use of drugs.

The overall benefits, received from this spartan and inexpensive of all physical and mental health care plans, are dramatic and available to most. Learn more about running and its positive effects on anxiety.
