What Does A Nervous Breakdown Mean?

I went chakkering away in the last article, telling you that a nervous breakdown isn't really a nervous breakdown these days, so your question; "What does a nervous breakdown mean" is an eminently fair one.

It never has been used as a true medical diagnosis. It can't be found in DSM-IV-TR or ICD-10. A word or two about these mysterious letters. The former stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Text Revised in the year 2000. It's published by the American Psychiatric Association. The second set of letters, ICD-10, stands for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th. Revision. No such illness as 'nervous breakdown' appears in either of these august publications.

So what does a nervous breakdown mean? The best description I can find is that it's a "Non medical term which describes features of depression and anxiety." So there we are. We're back with our two old friends, depression and anxiety. What people call a nervous breakdown can occur if, for instance, they're suffering depression, but haven't sought treatment for it.

One thing is certain. On your own, without help or advice, you will not beat the condition. Advice, and preferably treatment, from a qualified psychiatrist is vital for your well-being. We'll be delving into depression a lot more soon, but a look at anxiety would be a good idea, to give everyone a grounding at least, in an attempt to help them with what they should do if faced by this menace.

The first thing is not to confuse panic and anxiety attacks with G.A.D., or General Anxiety Disorder. Both are different animals. The anxiety, or panic, attack is also due to stress, but we had a look at panic/anxiety attacks in another article. The General Anxiety Disorder, while nothing like as frightening as the attack, lasts a great deal longer, and is just as capable of making your life a misery.

Sometimes, there's a very good reason for the anxiety. Perhaps a mother and father have seen their son or daughter shipped off to Iraq or Afghanistan. In this sort of situation, all you can do is to ask yourself if there's anything you can do about it. Obviously, there isn't. Are you able to protect them once they're over there? Again, of course not. So however hard hearted it may seem, for your own sake, you must try to put their absence out of your mind. Do so with a hobby, some travelling perhaps, but brooding on it will only hurt you in the long run.

Oddly, the more likely event is that you start obsessing over something that's entirely imaginary. Cases are quite common where people finish work, come out of their office or factory and for no reason whatever, start to worry about whether their house has burned down. The fact that they had it completely re-wired by a highly qualified electrician about three years ago either never crosses their mind, or doesn't make any difference.

It needn't be fire, naturally. They could obsess about being flooded when we're in the middle of a dry spell or a tree's fallen on the roof, although there's been nothing more than a breeze for the last few days. Next time, we'll look at other obsessions and how to rid yourself of them.

I do hope this article's been of some use.
