Essential Oils for Insect Bites And Stings

When it comes to insect bites and stings, prevention is better than cure in this area too. The information contained in this article can be used at home and also when you go on holiday or to an area where you may be more exposed to insects for one reason or another.

As a general rule, lemongrass or citronella can be used to keep insects away. It’s a great idea to use airborne methods to accomplish this, such as dropping essential oil on strips of ribbon or paper and hanging them above your window or off the roof of the terrace, or hanging them from a tree etc (this is especially good if you don’t want insects to disturb your evening meal if you are eating outside). Or you could use the steam bowl method, or pop a few drops on a cotton ball and place on the radiator.

As a general rule, lavender will deter insects from landing on your skin.

If you have a plant spray bottle, you can easily make up an essential oil spray that will deter all sorts of flying bugs by adding a few drops of lemongrass or citronella to the water. Give your room a quick spray before you go out. Another good tip is to fill your en suite sink with hot water, add a few drops of lemongrass or citronella, leave the door open and let the aroma molecules float around your space. You could also place cups or mugs containing hot water and essential oil near an open window or anywhere else that bugs may enter your room.

Here is a great blend to deter insects:

  • 8 drops of lemongrass
  • 4 drops of thyme
  • 4 drops of peppermint
  • 4 drops or lavender

This blend can be used in a number of ways, you can put two drops of essential oil on a cotton ball or a tissue and leave it somewhere near your bed. You can pop a couple of drops on ribbon or tissue paper as mentioned above so that insects don’t bug you while you eat. You can dilute 2 drops in a table spoon of base oil for a body massage and you can add a couple of drops to any body cream you have.

If you are prone to bites, you can add 30 drops of lavender into 30ml of base vegetable oil and rub this onto any exposed areas of skin. Do this before you go to bed at night too.

If you do happen to get bitten, apply a drop of neat lavender to the area every five minutes for a total of 10 drops and the same can be said for a fish bite. If you are stung by a plant apply a drop of neat lavender or eucalyptus, wash with cold water and then apply another drop of the essential oil as soon as you can.
