Essential Oils for Skin Cleansing

The great thing about making your own skin cleanser is that you know exactly what’s in it and you can always change it slightly to suit your skin type exactly and also adjust them depending on the season.

Cleansing is all about getting rid of toxins that build up on our skin so it stands to reason that we may want a slightly different cleanser during the summer months when we are more outdoorsy than during the winter months while we tend to stay in more with central heating on.

All vegetable and nut oils are excellent for cleansing the skin as well as nourishing it. In ancient Rome, the Romans used to massage oils into their skin and then would scrape them off along with all the impurities.

A heavier oil is better for dry skin, I would use wheatgerm or perhaps avocado and a lighter oil is better for oily skin types, I would use almond or perhaps sunflower oil.

Here is a list of essential oils that are good for all skin types:

  • Lemon
  • Clary-Sage
  • Line
  • Sage
  • Thyme
  • Chamomile
  • Lavender
  • Geranium
  • Rosemary

Below I have outlined a great mix of ingredients that is suitable to use as a cleansing oil for all skin types:

  • 100ml of almond oil
  • 120g of ground almonds
  • 50ml of cider vinegar
  • 50ml of spring water
  • 6 drops of an essential oil of your choice from the list given earlier on this article.

Place all of the ingredients in a blender and give it a good whirl for around 2 minutes until a smooth paste is achieved. This can then be stored in a jar.

Below I have outlined some ingredients for a great multi-purpose cleansing oil:

  • 50ml of grapeseed oil
  • 20ml of sunflower oil
  • 20ml of sesame oil
  • 10ml of wheatgerm oil

Blend these together in a bowl or glass bottle before adding 5 drops of an essential oil of your choice from the list given earlier on this article, then blend again to ensure all the ingredients have intermingled. This mixture is an excellent make-up remover and general cleanser.

The next blend is a cocoa butter cleanser and you will need:

  • 100g of cocoa butter
  • 50ml of (warm) grapeseed oil
  • 50ml of (warm) spring water

You will need to melt the cocoa butter, then add the spring water and the grapeseed oil. Pop the mixture into the blender and give it a whizz until the mixture is cold. Then add 1 drop of sandalwood and 1 drop of rose maroc. This can then be stored in a jar.

The next lot of ingredients is a fabulous rich cleansing cream and works wonders on dehydrated skin.

  • 15g of beeswax
  • 30g of lanolin hydrous
  • 25ml of avocado oil
  • 25ml of grapeseed oil
  • 50ml of almond oil
  • 90ml of pure spring water
  • 2 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 2 drops of clary-sage essential oil

You will need to melt the beeswax, the lanolin and the vegetable oils carefully together. Add the essential oils, take off the heat and add the water. Pop the mixture into the blender and give it a whiz until the mixture is cold.
