Where Can Essential Oils Be Used

Essential oils can be used in a bath. Add a maximum of 8 drops to a bath, close the door and soak for at least ten minutes. Relax and inhale deeply through the nose. Unless specifically indicated there are some essential oils that should not be used in a bath and these are, basil, cinnamon, clove, peppermint, thyme, ginger and eucalyptus piperita.

Essential oils can be used in a shower. Wash as usual then put 1 - 2 drops of essential oil onto a wet washcloth or sponge and rub it over yourself briskly while standing under the hot water inhaling deeply through the nose.

In a sauna, only use eucalyptus, tea tree or pine as these enter the body with inhalation and are excellent cleansers and detoxifiers. Mix the oil with water beforehand (2 drops per 1 pint of water) and put on the heat as usual.

Essential oils are great in massage oil. Use as directed or 1 drop of essential oil in 1 ml of carrier or base oil. For the base oil it’s good to use sweet almond, hazelnut, peach kernel or grape seed. Mix the essential oil and the base oil in a clean brown glass bottle and if you are using a blend of essential oils, blend the essential oils in the brown glass bottle before adding the carrier oil. The essential oil/s care blended in the base oil by turning the bottle upside down a few times and rolling it briskly between the hands. An average amount for a full massage would be around one dessert spoon and if you suffer from allergies, it will be best to perform a skin test on a small patch of skin and leave for twenty four hours before doing the full massage.

Place 1 drop on a tissue or a handkerchief and simply inhale when required.

Essential oils can be used on a pillowcase but some essential oils will leave a mark so just bear that in mind. I usually pop a drop of lavender on the corner of my pillowcase if I’m finding it difficult to sleep. Another alternative is to pop a drop on a cotton ball and place it inside the corner of the pillowcase.

The same can be said when adding a drop of essential oil onto clothing, please bear in mind that some may leave a mark. If one of my children has a blocked up nose, for example, I pop a drop of eucalyptus either on the cuff of their top so they can sniff it when it suits them or sometimes I pop a drop on the collar area so that the aroma can rise up and help with the blocked nose.

Essential oils can be inhaled as vapour by simply pouring hot water into a bowl, adding the essential oil (2 – 3 drops), placing your head around 10 inches away but over the bowl covered with a towel so that both sides are closed. You must keep your eyes shut and just breathe deeply through the nose for around 1 minute.

For the room method, pour some hot water into a small bowl, add some essential oil (1 – 9 drops), close the windows and doors and allow around 5 – 10 minutes for the fragrance to saturate the air. The fragrance should not be overpowering.

Diffusers are another great way for using essential oils because diffusers are specially made for the use of essential oils. They have a bowl section at the top which is usually heated by a candle flame. Always put water in the bowl before adding the essential oil (1 – 6 drops).

Popping 1 – 9 drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and placing on a radiator is a simple but very effective way to use essential oil.

You can also pop 1 – 9 drops of essential oil in the water of a humidifier.

Making your own room spray is another great idea. Pop some warm water into a new plant sprayer, add the essential oil (4 drops per half pint on average) and shake. Spray high into the air and don’t spray over polished wooden furniture or velvet or other valuable items you wouldn’t put water on.

There are special rings which are made specifically for sitting on the top of a light bulb in a table lamp. They have a hollow section which can take the essential oil. Always put the ring on the bulb when it is off and cool and do take extra care not to spill the essential oil as essential oils are flammable.

Log fires are a wonderful way to enjoy essential oil. Use pine, sandalwood, cedarwood or cypress essential oils. Put 1 drop on each log half an hour before lighting, sit back and enjoy.

Dropping 1 drop of essential oil per silk or paper flower is a lovely way to enjoy essential oil. You will now not only have a visual display but also one which smells divine.

Essential oils can also be added to creams and lotions. If you are not making your own, always buy the purest, most simple product you can find, add the essential oil and give it a mix.
