Job Interviewing And Arthritis

On December 23, 2013 I was up late one night searching the net for jobs. I came across one that I knew I had the skills necessary to perform. It was a driving job requiring me to transport a specialty needs child to school and back home. It was about 1 am when I submitted my resume online. That morning I received a phone call from the employer, talk about a fast response. The person I talked to was very friendly and gave a brief but thorough description of the job. I was to drive a company car approximately 400 miles daily. You see I live in the same town as the student and the school is just a hair over 100 miles one way. I would keep the company car at my residence when I'm not driving. At this point of our phone interview, I am thinking this is the job for me and was asked if I was still interested. As you may have guessed I said in a excited voice "yes I am very much interested".

So a face to face interview was arranged for December 30th at 10am. I prepared for the interview two days before, you know, suit and tie type interview. The time came so I drove a little over 100 miles to the office where the interview would take place and arrived one hour early. I just wanted to make sure I found the place so I allotted that time span. I did call them with my cell phone to let them know I was already there and a woman just told me to come on in.

I waited inside a little over an hour which was no big deal because of my earlier arrival and it was somewhat cold outside and I didn't want to run my car for that long. Finally I met the gentleman that conducted the interview and he took my drivers license to run a check. Of course it came back clean, by the way I never had a ticket and I never been in an accident.

Step one of the interview was the in car driving. We used my car, go figure. Anyway we drove around Columbus where he wanted me to go. Being that I have ankylosing spondylitis he noticed that I have limited range of motion. As we were driving, we made general conversation and I asked him how many had applied for this position and was surprised to hear that I was the only one to apply from the same town where the student lived.

Okay, wow I am thinking I nailed it, the job is mine right? wrong. I couldn't be more wrong. when we returned to the office I was conducted to the employee lounge and asked to wait. The wait time was 20 minutes when he came for me and led me to a conference room. Yes I am going to get it. I am still in that mind set. What question came next was "did you sleep wrong? because I noticed that you couldn't turn your head completely to make turns". My heart sank with that question. I didn't want to lie what would that serve.

I explained to him my condition and asked how were my driving skills were and he was impressed after I told him that my stiff neck was permanent. Okay he tells me and he appreciated my candor. He rose and told me he would be right back. He returned and I could see the look of bad news. I'm sorry but we can't offer you the position. The main reason is that you would be to much of a risk. I am a "risk" he says. I hit rock bottom. I needed to get out of there. I politely shook his hand, said thank you and I beat feet for the door.

As I was driving back home I knew I have to get over this. This has happened before. Always the first question out of an interviewer's mouth is "how did you hurt your back" or "what's wrong with your neck". As I was driving home my thoughts were to just get over it and overcome. Just push ahead because that's all one can do.
