A person who has never had a gout attack can often times be ill prepared when they experience their first attack. Gout can attack very quickly and bring even the bravest of men and women to tears from the pain.

A person suffering a gout attack will often experience sharp excruciating pain in the affected joint. Along with the pain in the affected joint the person can experience swelling, redness, tenderness and warmth. Due to the pain movement can also be restricted.

Attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days to weeks. The most common spot for an attack is the big toes but other areas affected are the ankles, knees, wrists, fingers and elbows.

There are medications that a person can take to help with the symptoms and the pain of gout. Gout sufferers however are looking for more natural cures for gout since they do not like some of the side effects of the prescribed medication.

Following are some things that a gout sufferer can do to help them cope with the symptoms and the pain of gout.

One of the simplest things a gout sufferer can do is to increase their daily intake of water. By drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day a person can help flush out uric acid. You can also add lemon juice to your water. The fresh squeezed lemon juice stimulates the body to form calcium carbonate which will neutralize uric acid. Remember this will also help an overweight person to lose those extra pounds that may be putting stress on their kidneys.

Gout sufferers can cope with the symptons and the pain of gout by adding cherries or cherry juice to their diet. It doesn't matter whether the cherries are canned or fresh, sweet or sour both have anti-inflammatory properties that help with gout.

Other fruits that help flush uric acid crystals are strawberries, blueberries and grapes. The combination of nutrients and high fiber content help in battling gout symptoms.

Other foods that can be ingested which help with the symptoms and pain of gout but may not be as easy on the palate are apple cider vinegar and minced garlic. You can disguise the taste of the cider vinegar by mixing it with Warm water and honey. The vinegar is believed to change the blood's pH which will help lower your uric acid levels. Minced garlic can be mixed with cherry juice to make it easier to ingest. This combination can be a potent natural pain reliever.

Taking vitamin C can also help lower levels of uric acid and also a daily dose of shark cartilage can help to alleviate the pain of gout.

Other natural remedies that gout sufferers can turn to are things like a charcoal poultice. The gout sufferer would mix up the poultice which would take on a paste form and apply it to the affected joint.

Another natural remedy for gout sufferers that is quite effective is the application of ice on the affected area.

So as you see gout sufferers have other options rather than prescribed medications and the sometimes ill side effects to treat the pain of gout.
