I have to declare immediately that I don’t think article writing is a chore at all. I’m lucky, most of the time I find writing articles very easy to do, and on the days that I struggle I get myself going by writing about absolutely anything, like the weather or the last film I saw, or why I like to wear black clothing. I don’t worry about grammar, punctuation or whether it makes any sense. It really doesn’t matter. Just the art of putting words on a page is enough to get my creative juices working and once my writing is flowing again I turn to what I had planned to write and away I go.
However, I know that it’s not so easy for everyone. I talk to a lot of people who are trying to set up their own online business and need to write articles for their website as well as ones to post in article directories and they get frustrated that it takes them such a long time to write
Now not everyone wants advice from someone who finds it easy because they think I don’t realise how difficult it is. But when I first started article writing it could take me up to 8 hours to write a single article and that time was normally spread over several days. So although I find it easy now – that wasn’t always the case and I worked hard to get to the place where I am now.
Be positive
If you start out telling yourself that you’re rubbish at writing, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Tell yourself that you can do it and don’t waste energy putting yourself down.
Don’t seek perfection
You might want to become the best article writer in the world and that’s laudable, but if you spend hours trying to make an article absolutely perfect before you will publish it – you’re doomed for failure. I don’t imagine there are any great writers who haven’t wanted to improve on everything they have done – but they know at some point you have to say ‘this is good enough’. The main difference between a group of article writers and a group of would be article writers is that the group of article writers are so called because they have committed their words to a page and published the results.
Write something every day
It may be a bit of a cliché but you need to think ‘practice makes perfect’. Well perhaps not perfect, but it will become easier the more you do it. So it’s no good writing one day and then avoiding writing for another fortnight, because if writing is a chore it will be difficult every time you try it. Commit to writing every day. Even if you only allocate 20 minutes per day you’ll find that a daily habit will help the writing to flow more easily.
Take time to improve your skills
Obviously writing frequently will help you to generate ideas and help your writing to flow more easily, but it won’t help you to improve your grammar, punctuation, spelling or editing skills. Depending on the level of your skills you may need to get further practice, particularly if the errors you make disrupt the reader’s understanding. If you can get someone else to read through your work.
Brainstorm ideas
I’ve often been told by people that it’s easy to write if you have interesting topics to write about but some subjects are far more challenging or boring and therefore more difficult to generate ideas for article writing. I don’t agree with this at all as what is deemed ‘interesting’ is purely subjective. I regularly take any old topics and see how many ideas I can generate within 5 minutes. The least I’ve ever come up with is 18. Like writing every day it’s something that you need to do regularly in order to generate ideas. There are different ways in which you can brainstorm ideas and you need to find something that works for you. The aim though is to have a stock of ideas which you could write about which will ease the stress of trying to come up with something new to write about on a daily basis.
Summary
Article writing shouldn’t be a chore. Even if it’s not your favourite thing to do among your internet marketing activities, there are steps that you can take to make it easier on yourself such as writing daily, improving your skills, brainstorming ideas and maintaining a positive attitude. Happy writing.
