A true story of Seth Adams Smiths website.
What does it take to become viral on the web? The best answer to the question is sharing.
A blog post that's written about marriage by Seth Adam Smith on November the 22nd went viral, and has now had nearly twenty-six million views. It is difficult to imagine what sitting watching your stats be like when you have ten million visits in one day.
He's interviewed and the article's published. The article he wrote is titled “Marriage isn’t for you”. Would one search for such a title on Google? Not sure that is where the visits came from, but he mentions that his interest tweaked when his Brother-in-law shared the post on face book.
This seems to have then been shared by so many more people, just the same as I did when I read it, the post went viral and is continuing to receive much interest.
This is a lesson for us all that strive to get people to read our posts and articles. I’m not sure that he really did a lot of research into tags and SEO’s, but he certainly gained a lot from Face Book. This is a lesson, if one can get others to share your posts on a site such as Face Book, you too can get a post to become one of the most read articles in a day.
Can you imagine what this could do for those that have websites, there to make pocket-money? He admits that most of the traffic came from Face Book, testament to the power of the share. So remember to encourage your readers to share on the different interactive sites.
His site is now probably one of the most popular and I think anything he pens now'll be read by thousands, I’m following him since reading the article. He is but a humble man who has written and published a book, of which I’m sure he is now selling by the thousands.
A lesson gained from this, sure SEO’s and correct writing to gain Google positioning is important, but I think that convincing your followers to share your articles and posts is probably just as important.
Seth’s article found on his site, which I'm not allowed to add a link to, also has an interesting video clip. I encourage you all to go and read both articles, one for the pleasure of finding out why “Marriage isn’t for you” and the other to discover how a humble man gained traffic to a website that is difficult to believe, yet is true.
Thanks for this lesson. I'd love to get my stuff to go viral:-) Will try to apply what I learned here.
Exactly what I thought... when I started blogging on wordpress my stats or readers were almost non existant, till one lady from Turkey who had been following decided to reblog mu post... I now have 750 odd followers, 660 odd posts with 30 000 odd comments.... this is the reason I say share where you can if that is what you want others to do for you... thanks for the visit...
I have noticed on one of my WP posts that was shared, moved me up on a Google search to a first page... I get hits on that post every single day, the least 1 going up some days to 50 +... and that is just from one share... I've now had over 4 000 reads of that post... I keep a close watch on my WP stats, not because I'm looking to have 1 000s of views but because I am fascinated with stats, (much like our software package) and I can tell you if I do certain things on a Friday (which is the worst stat day to post on) I can change a daily viewing of 120 odd to 250 odd... the internet is a fascinating place to play on...
Interesting. Wonder why Friday's work less well. Good suggestion, on paying attention to statistics.
Thanks Kymee... felt I had to write this down as a reminder to myself...
