Terratry; An Analytical Golf Course Management Program

Terratry a software package developed by a Keeper of the Greens.

How would terratry help a golf course when it is not a maintenance program, or tell one when to apply chemicals or fertilisers? It’s not an accounting package, not even a time keeping program. So how will it help a golf course control or manage expenditure, for that matter enable cost savings?

Let’s first look at a golf course.

What is a golf course? A prepared area for sportsman to play the game of golf. The surface of the areas requires a different standard of preparation, height of mowing and care.

Is the preparation for all the areas equally important, or are some more important than others? All areas are equal, just some are more equal than others. What! I hear the gasps of wonder, well it is so. Tee off areas must be well prepared, level and the grass cut short. Fairways, the landing area, also cut to an acceptable length. Greens, cut short, smooth and a perfect surface.

Now all of those sound similar in a way, but are they? No; a golfer drives off the tee box, attempting to get as far as possible, or into the best possible place for his next shot. Hopefully his ball has landed on the fairway, this shot could be anything up to three hundred yards in length. His next shot, a hundred yard plus distance, to land on the green. A putt of say two yards is left for the much sought after “birdie”.

Considering that each of shots mentioned all count one stroke, is it not logically fair that the green should be the best prepared surface? The answer is yes, if this surface was unevenly cut, bumpy and unpredictable then these short shots could be a nightmare. If this was not the best prepared and looked after area on the course, then it should be, as this is where the money's made. Consider the golf professionals that could be putting for the difference between first and second prize, could be a half a million dollars, this could kill the game.

The old golf saying comes to mind; “one drives for show and putts for dough”.

Now what does terratry do?

It considers this logic and analyses where the money's being spent. Most golf courses cannot tell you exactly what a green is costing per square metre to prepare. Or for that matter any other feature on the course.

The program has astounded some when it's discovered they were spending more on bunkers, a hazard, than on tees. In fact that the bunkers were the second most expensive feature on the course after the greens. Further analysis showed that whilst this true and the greens were the most expensive, there was more being spent on labour for the bunkers than on the greens.

This cannot be the case and remedial steps taken turned the figures to a more correctly managed expenditure, also to a massive financial saving. Let the money, time and effort be shared in the correct ratios on the course.

Without the software this was never known, and this was merely one small discovery made. There were so many more anomalies shown, so many saving opportunities available and a greater ease of control enabled for future expenditure. Costs for course changes, budgeting and all future expenditure more accurately predictable.

Staff usage, equipment management and a good control on expenditure will make huge savings on a course. This can, and is achievable using terratry software, a tried and tested program.

Like your article Rob. One would assume that all golf clubs have some idea of their expenditure even if only recorded on a spread sheet. Presumably your software offers more because of the level of detail it drills down into? Assuming quality/accurate and timely information is fed into the software, How long would you expect it to be before you would see real opportunities for making savings? FYI - I read an article this week which stated that in the UK only about a third of golf clubs show a profit mainly due to too many course (competition) and falling memberships (economic conditions). Strangely, numbers that play are increasing with people opting to play on pay as you play courses rather than become a member of one club.

One can get control after a month and start to make saving decisions after 3 odd months.. the beauty of it is the immediate surprise that people have when they see where the expenditure is going to, which is obvious after only a week or two.. We have had courses that tested the program come back and say there had to be a problem after only a week.. when looking into the facts and figures they were all correct and they had already found errors in practice that they corrected immediately... This is a system I developed over years and used for 3, with great results, it kept me aware of incorrect expenditure and where I was spending too much on the wrong things... I can actually feel another article developing here... Yes courses here are in trouble as well.. having to put subs up to balance budgets.. and immediately loosing memebers and returning back to the same income/ expenditure ratio... Paying off of staff another favourite, why? cause they can see what the difference is going to be.. but they forget that now there are less workers to do the same job and the course suffers... They forget with the labour laws pay off staff is hellish expensive.. I can almost guarantee a saving of 7 - 10 % after a years figures are entered and proper analysis and corrective decisions made... think how much that is on a five million budget...
