I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but I have been a Jeff Gordon fan for years. Today, I am disappointed in his actions. I am disappointed by the response of an athlete who has been know as a class-act and role model in his sport. I understand the reasoning for his actions, but wish he would have made another choice.
In yesterday's race at Phoenix, Jeff Gordon intentionally wrecked Jeff Bowyer ending Bowyer's race and championship hopes. Earlier in the race Bowyer got into the back of Gordon's car. Gordon had been racing near the front of the pack all day and this incident ended his chances of finishing near the front. Then late in the race, reports state that Gordon waited on the track for Bowyer in order to wreck him. Once both cars were in the pits, an enormous fight broke out between the two teams. NASCAR officials will decide punishments later in the week.
Again, I understand Gordon's frustration and desire for retaliation (he claims Bowyer has acted this way numerous times this season), but I wish he would have chosen a different path. Gordon is heralded as one of the greatest drivers to ever race. Even in later age and nearing the end of his career, he continues to remain a contender for a fifth cup championship. Many fans look to Gordon as an example for the sport. He has always had a reputation as one who is different than the majority of NASCAR drivers, certainly not that of a "dirty" driver. Obviously his emotions caught up with him.
This incident is a great reminder to me. It is so important to keep my emotions in check. Retaliation can be costly, and may be very costly to Jeff Gordon. He will likely face large fines, potentially a suspension, but even worse is the damage to his reputation. Even his peers have looked up to him, but many were extremely angry towards him yesterday. Interviews were full of criticism of Gordon. Other drivers were very verbal towards Gordon's action through their social media accounts. One quick action may have destroyed the image Gordon has worked so hard to build!
What is your reputation? How long have you been working to build it? What do you want your reputation to be among your peers? Remember, it takes a lifetime to build your reputation and only one act to destroy it! Jeff Gordon will always be remembered as a great driver. He will remain in the history books for his number of wins, championships, and money earned. However, his actions yesterday may haunt him for many years to come!
Oh common, there is so much retaliation in NASCAR and because Jeff Gordon did it people are upset, Really. Boyer had it coming in so many ways and he caused his hit on Jeff to put him back, yet that was Okay, Really. When other drivers do it everyone gives them a little slap on the hand but because Jeff Gordon did it people are horrified, come on! Everyone needs to get a grip it is a sport and it happens, in football, baseball, soccer, hockey and believe it or no NASCAR.
