K - Mag \'pain In the Butt\' for Ron Dennis

Danish Formula 1 reserve driver, Kevin Magnussen, affectionately known as K-Mag, has been a 'pain in the butt' these past 4 months, according to Ron Dennis, McLaren group CEO.

The controversy around McLaren's driver line up for 2015 began halfway through the the 2014 Formula 1 season. 22 year old Magnussen was paired with 2009 World Champion, Jenson Button, in 2014 and had a mixed season. While he was able to show good pace compared with his veteran team mate, Magnussen was criticised for rookie mistakes and overly aggressive driving, often by Button himself who was on the receiving end of some questionable moves by the young Dane.

At the end of last year, McLaren left the pair in limbo by delaying their decision for the 2015 driver line up. Crucially, one seat had been taken be former Ferrari driver and double world champ, Fernando Alonso. The new partnership with engine supplier Honda, also added to the mix in the decision making process; Button could bring experience to the team, which would help with development, but he would cost more than Magnussen. After much criticism from fans of Button, CEO Ron Dennis decided to keep Button in the race seat, with Magnussen as the reserve driver.

Jenson Button, one of the nicest characters on the grid, was relieved to keep his seat at McLaren, as were his many thousands of fans. Understandably, K-Mag felt he got a raw deal and ended up 'moping around' for the first part of the 2015 season, according to Dennis. Magnussen has since buckled up and started to provide input to the struggling team and is learning from his veteran colleagues, Alonso and Button.

Dennis recently met with several elite Danish business leaders to discuss Magnussen's future in the sport. While he believes the Dane has what it takes to be in F1, Dennis discussed the reality facing many current Formula 1 drivers and those aspiring to be in the sport: the need for financial backing. McLaren spends £200 million per year to participate in F1 and needs to see a return on their investment. Dennis called on the businessmen to 'make Kevin a hero' and show patriotism by helping Magnussen to further his career in F1.

Many Formula 1 drivers, past and present, have huge financial backing to be in the sport. Perhaps the most controversial driver is Venezuelan, Pastor Maldonado. Nicknamed "Crashtor", Maldonado has had a terrible season, finishing only 1 race so far. Although mainly down to bad luck, Maldonado has had many spectacular crashes since he came into the sport, backed by the Venezuelan government. Critics are furious that Maldonado appears to be wreckless, but can't be dropped because he brings so much sponsorship money to the Lotus team. This also closes the door for arguably more talented drivers, who don't have the same level of financial backing. It appears that Ron Dennis is directly referring to the arrangements Maldonado has in place and is asking the Danes to follow suit. It may well be that Magnussen has no future at McLaren, but Dennis has made it clear that he wants to help the young Dane get the support he deserves to further his career in F1.
