Make Your Rc Car Handle Like it Should Part II

Continued from Part I………….

Like full size racing cars rely on the tyre manufacturer supplying a race wining tyre combo for any given track this is no different for your RC car. Each track is unique in its surface and luckily members of a home track will in most cases advise you on what works and what doesn’t. The other option is to take a plethora of tyres (only joking, or am I?) and start playing around with a few choice options until it feels right. Sometimes races are conducted with controlled tyres and this makes it equal for everyone. There is a constant stream of suppliers updating tyre compounds and the technology is no different to the big boys.

Low Rider

With your on-road RC car, did you know that the ride height can also affect a cars handling? A lower ride height will help the overall centre of gravity and can improve on general balance, stability and feel of the car, but there is a catch!? To low and yes the car chassis will scrape, and will lose you valuable overall time, too high and your car might roll over a lot. If you decide to get competitive and take on club racing there are also certain ride height guidelines that you must submit to for each class of car within the general rules.

Taming Your Beast

So you have learnt a little bit on what different aspects of your suspension and tyre set up can do. Adding lead weight in the right places can also help with the overall balance and also help get the traction were you need it. Your scaled down car can also over-steer and under-steer too, just like your 1:1 car can. Don’t be afraid to experiment (trial and error), sometimes you might need to do a full 180deg drastic change in your car setup to see and understand what it does and why it’s doing it!

Are You Drifting Away?

Today I have touched on a very technical aspect of RC car handling and things to look out for. Don’t be put off or intimidated by all this and trust me, I have barely scratched the surface on this subject. If you get the opportunity and can bee line it to your nearest club track, make sure you can source out an expert with the same or similar car that you have. Seeking advice and learning some new tips on correcting your odd behaving RC car will definitely help, so you don’t end up drifting away from this great hobby!

Street Talk

Do you guys ever put those tiny lipstick videocams behind the windshield in your cars? Maybe it would add too much weight with the sending unit. It would be cool to watch a video monitor in front of you viewing what the driver would see from inside the RC car.

Well that would be interesting Steve regarding the scaffolding but at 1/10 and drivers elevated on the drivers stand it's called peripheral vision lol. To John; it can be technical and very rewarding as well once your car is set up and dialed in.

Sounds like Nascar. Next thing you know you'll need spotters to tell you where you're at on the track and folks will be building scaffolds in the infield to watch the races!
