Gas prices rise all the time. They just keep going up. And since the politicians don't seem to be able to get it sorted, the general public are stuck with the short straw, paying for the oil executive's huge salaries etc...
I'm not bitter. Sob.
It does make sense though to improve your gas milage if you're able to. Thankfully there are a number of tips that you can implement, that don't cost anything or are very cheap. This article contains a few of those such tips. While in their present state they are just words on a computer screen, in your life they could be worth hundreds of dollars in savings.
Air Pressure. Have you tried to ride a cycle that doesn't have its tires pumped up to the correct pressure? It's really difficult, and it really sucks your energy. It's a bit harder to see in your car, as you aren't physically powering it. Try to get into the habit of checking your air pressure when you fill up the car (or every second fill up). This will ensure you're not wasting any energy on tires that aren't inflated correctly.
Tighten Your Fuel Filler Cap. Apparently 147 million galleons of fuel vaporise in the US a year due to fuel filler caps not being tightened as much as they could be. It seems so simple - but you could be wasting a lot of money if it's not tightened correctly! If you suspect that the seal on your cap could be a bit suspect, visit a mechanic and get it fixed.
Stop Idling. If you suspect you're going to be stationary for more then thirty seconds, turn your engine off. Some cars do this automatically, and it's a bit weird if you've never experienced it before. If you just know you're going to be waiting at the lights for longer then half a minute though, turn it off. You don't need to idle your car.
Think Ahead. I know I've been on a number of car trips where I just didn't know what I was doing, and just drove around in circles. Well, that's a waste. Planning your trip in advance will save you fuel, and will also help with the stress levels! If you need to pick up the dry cleaning and you also need to grab some fruit, plan your trip so you're over that part of town at the same time. A little thought goes a very long way.
Tips too simple for you? Don't worry, there's more where that came from. I trust you're going to implement these now, right? I hope so. Those savings are right there! Snatch them!
