In January 2012, LiveViewGPS announced its new GPS tracking device, the Live Trac EZ GPS Vehicle Tracker. This device is simply plugged into a connector that is called Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under the dash of most cars manufactured and sold in the U.S.. Through DLC auto mechanics can access on-board diagnostic (OBD) system when a car needs to be fixed. Like auto mechanics does, you can install or uninstall new GPS device in no time. And this makes it possbile that you can move the device from one car to another. In addition to that, the device provides only 10 second vehicle tracking update.
LiveViewGPS is a Location Based Service Company. It provides wireless location products and services for personal, business and even law enforcement. Depending on car's models and years, law enforcement agency can remotely control vehicle speed, disable starting system or ignition system for an emergency. (such as having a car stolen or chasing a bank robber)
"It's ideal for personal and commercial use." said Christa Markman, director of product development for LiveViewGPS. In my opinion, it is ideal for commercial use but not really for personal. As compared with OnStar, it obviously lacks fun features. OnStar also provides vehicle tracking and remote control features. Plus OnStar has many user-friendly, entertainment features. (such as hand-free talk, turn-by-turn navigation, skype, and so on) Now many 3rd-party developers are creating new applications for OnStar. You will be able to see a brand-new way of using vehicles with this system.
Yet, for people who don't like to be watched or monitored your vehicle's location or condition all the time, a detachable device is ideal. Because Onstar devices are built into vehicles. Even though you stop payiing for this system, it is possible for the authorities to access to the system. They can even slow down you car or disable some of vehicle's systems as well as locating your car.
I guess that vehicles with these kind of device will be mandatory in the future whether you like it or not. When it happens, a number of car theft will be reduced, it's obvious. A number of crime will be reduced, criminals won't be able to use a car for a get-away. They might as well do nothing bad - there is great chance that they end up in a jail. Car clashes will be less, reckless and speeding drivers are detected by the police and forced to slow down remotely.
It's good for an environment, too. Many drivers ignore check engine light until the next inspection simply because they don't want to spend money. The light tell that you something is wrong with your car, in most cases, with the emission system. Wherever your car is, your car's problem will be reported and you will be notified by cellphone or limiting the vehicle speed. You won't be able to avoid having it repaired.
I'm not sure that it's going to happen this way but if it is, maybe it would be much sooner than you think.
