Tips For Buying A Used Honda
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

It is no secret that a used Honda can be a great buy. It can also be a nightmare if the previous owner raced or modified the car.

Hondas started to really get popular with teenagers and those in their twenties towards the end of the 90s. Honda is what muscle cars were back in the day. What you find on the used car market are a lot of abused Hondas. I am not only talking about Preludes and Integras, Accords and Civics have been modified by many. I have owned at least 12 used Hondas (one brand new) and know what to look for. Here are some tips for buying a used Honda.

Look under the hood to see if any modifications have been made to the intake. An easy mod (one I have done myself) is to replace the stock intake manifold with an aftermarket cold air intake. Not that these will harm the car in itself, but it could mean that the car was raced (although an intake might only net a few horsepower). I knew someone who ran his car into standing water and the cold air intake sucked the water into the motor, not a good situation.

I prefer Hondas with manual transmissions due to their smooth shifting and light clutch. Manual transmissions also mean that the car could have been abused while racing. When test driving, you should rev the car close to the redline before shifting in each gear. Racers usually jam the shifter into third when racing. This results in a grind or "scratch" noise when shifting at high RPM. This means that the synchro needs replacing which is a very expensive fix. You won't always hear the grind until high RPMs so make sure to rev the engine up when shifting.

Hondas with over 100k miles should have had their timing belt replaced. This can run between 600 to 1000 dollars to replace. If this doesn't get done, the belt will eventually break and your valves will bend meaning an expensive engine overhaul. I have learned this the hard way. Always make sure that a higher mileage Honda has had the timing belt replaced and you verify this with maintenance records (most people probably don't change a timing belt themselves).

Lastly, a lot of Honda owners have performed their own body work and it usually shows. Check for paint overspray on windows, trim, and lights. If a windshield has been replaced, make sure it was done by a reputable company. A bad install can mean leaks and rust around the windshield.
