Which Cars Have The Highest Destination Fees?

Buying a new car is obviously more expensive than buying a used one. When you buy a new car, there are various fees that you have to pay, in addition to the purchase price. There is the sales tax, vehicle registration fees, prep fees, doc fees, and other hidden fees that dealers fail to mention while negotiating the price. While you can avoid paying some of these fees, there is one additional fee you must pay. It's the destination charge, which is also called a transportation fee, a freight fee, or a delivery fee. It's a government mandated fee, which is usually listed somewhere at the bottom of a new car sticker.

Dealers charge this fee because they have to pay the same fee to the manufacturer for having the car delivered onto the dealership lot. Every manufacturer charges dealerships with these shipping costs, and dealerships collect that fee from the customer. Although this fee is used to cover the costs that manufacturers have to bear when transporting their vehicles from assembly plants to dealership lots, it doesn't mean that a car costs more if you buy it from a dealership that is further away from the plant where it was assembled. This fee is the same in all dealerships, no matter where they are located.

However, the destination charge is not the same for all makes, models and types of vehicles. In general, the higher the purchase price of a vehicle is, the higher the destination charge will be. This means that expensive, luxury vehicles come with higher delivery fees. This is because the costs for preparing a luxury vehicle for transportation and making sure it's well protected, so it doesn't get damaged, are higher than they are for cheaper vehicles. The same thing applies to vehicles that are very large and heavy, because of the time and money that is required to transport such vehicles.

As far as which brands have the highest destination charges, they include luxury sedans, as well as expensive sports cars. For example, a delivery fee for a Bentley, one of the most popular luxury car brands, is over $2,500, and if you are considering buying a Ferrari, you would have to pay a destination charge of about $2,000. On the other end of the scale are the likes of Fiat, Ford and Kia, with a delivery fee ranging between $600 and $700. No matter what type of car you want to buy, you have to make sure you take the destination fees into account when determining how much you are willing to pay for a new car.
