Getting Your Private Pilot License

For those aspiring to become a pilot, the first step in the process is to obtain your private pilot license. This is one of the basic licenses needed when you learn to fly, and is issued by the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) after 35-45 hours of ground and flight instruction. Those who opt to attend a flight school certified by the FAA can obtain their license in 35 hours of mixed instruction.

Training will begin with ground school and will involve all aspects of air navigation, safety, aerodynamic fundamentals, and regulations. Students will be taught about weather, reading aeronautical charts, proper aircraft inspection methods, and how to properly communicate and navigate while on the ground at the airport.

Typically, a Cessna 152 or 172 airplane is used while you learn to fly because these small, single-engine airplanes have a reliable track record for safety and durability. The average student is usually ready to fly solo after 30-35 hours of flight time with their instructor. Ten hours of solo flight time will be needed to obtain a private pilot license; three hours of successful night flying; and one cross country flight consisting of five hours of flight time covering at least 150 miles must be completed.

During this phase, a student learns how to properly take off, control the airplane, recover from a stall, and land. When the student and instructor are both confident about the student's abilities, an FAA test is administered on both the ground and in the air. Upon passing, the student is issued their private pilot license, and they are free to start building experience on their own.

Some conditions of holding a private pilot license are that the pilot can only fly in VFR conditions, meaning that the weather must be clear with a good visual reference to the ground; the pilot cannot fly for hire; the pilot must hold a class third class medical certificate; and the private pilot must have their licenses renewed every 24 months by performing a check flight with an instructor.

A private pilot license is the most commonly held license in the aviation industry. Many individuals with an interest to learn to fly are content with stopping at this point in the licensing process. For those wishing to advance further into the realm of flight, several other certifications may be obtained.

Being a pilot can be extremely fulfilling in a way that simply cannot be found with your feet on the ground. The sense of freedom that comes from being above the rat race is a feeling like no other. If it has always been your aspiration to fly, you are encouraged to take advantage of the multitudes of flight schools and promotions that are now being offered to make your dream become a reality.
